Aside from my eye shadow, the one step in my makeup routine that takes me the longest to perfect is my eyebrows. I know I am not alone in this undertaking. People say your eyebrows are sisters, not twins, and we shouldn't obsess over them. If that is true, then why have there been so many different eyebrow trends throughout the years? In the '80s, people rocked bushy brows, the '90s and early 2000s brought us thin pencil brows, and this past decade we have seen an emergence in everything from bold, brushed, accessorized, and even dyed. You would think that would be all, but guess what? There is a new eyebrow trend gracing social media, one that actually might have some weight to it: Soap brows.
No, this term has nothing to do with the physical shape of your brows. Instead, it has to do with the grooming technique, which is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of using eyebrow gel, beauty gurus and makeup artists are opting for soap since it is stronger, simpler, and more affordable.
As a working model, I shouldn't be surprised this technique is now a trend. I remember someone using soap on my eyebrows nearly three years ago, and I thought nothing of it. Although this is nothing new, eyebrow artist Robin Evans credits Rihanna's makeup artist Priscilla Ono for sparking the viral sensation. The fact that it requires minimal effort might also be a plus. All you need is a clean spoolie and glycerin-based soap. Glycerin soap has a low pH meaning it prevents irritation, this is always a plus when you are putting something directly on your skin.
This trend is so popular that companies like Iconic London or West Barn Co offer soap brow kits and sell them at mainstream stores like Ulta and Target. If you are looking for extra hold, you can also spray your brows with setting mist after styling them with soap. Just remember, don't go overboard. If you add too much soap, you won't have control over your brows.
Of course, there is one downside to soap brows. Makeup artist Linda Hallberg says foundation and soap are not a good combination. However, soap brows are an inexpensive and time-tested method to achieve natural and full brows. The reason this look caught on is because it makes brows look natural and full. If you are in the market to have eyebrows like Cindy Crawford or Cara Delevingne, then soap brows might be your solution!
