So You Want To Be a Tree

The first things you need to realize before you branch out:

1. You need to accept the soil you came out of.

If you came from dirt that wasn't watered daily because of a severe drought wiped out your chances of having a significant life beyond this tiny seed know that it does not matter. What if you came from the manufactured mulch bought from one of the hardware depot chains? It does not matter where you come from as long as you rise. As long as you know, your rising up to the surface is important.

2. You need to accept the sun may not always shine on you.

Part of this life is recognizing that this world we all live on is ours a whole. Yes, this world is made of individual organisms working together to create said world, but we cannot let our ego of being an individual in a collection of other organisms believe I is superior over we. Us. Seeing the world as something personal cannot be done. We need to realize there are a lot of other components and organisms in this world that make us who we (as the individual) are. We are made by taking components of every being we come in contact with and forming a being unlike anything ever created before. It is how and why we are each unique.

3.Don't be afraid to break through.

At some point in the future, when you are ready, there will be a time when you need to break away from the dirt you know and poke through to a whole new world. You may be scared of what this place is and what it will do for you. Please know that this world is only big because all you know is your roots.

4. Keep your roots close to you.

Your roots will connect you with who you are and where you came from. They will always ground you so don't let them get twisted, but don't forget about them either.

5. Drink water.

You may think just because you broke away from your dirt, you can live your life the way you want and don't have do what your roots told you to do your whole life. Well, I am here to tell you that you need to still need to drink water. You need to still drink water because it is what keeps you here on this earth in the first place.

6. Breathe

You need to remember that we are all sharing the same oxygen, but you are only a tree you need to take breaks. You need to let you air enter your body so you can stay calm. You need to relax and take time for yourself. See that this world is a big, big place and if we don't stop to appreciate it, it might be gone the next day.

7. Don't be afraid of winter.

In other words, don't be afraid to change yourself. Change is a necessary part of this life but please don't forget who you are. You can change your appearance on the outside, but you will always be a tree on the inside. You will never stop growing even if sometimes it takes awhile to see how much you've changed.

8. Stand up for what you believe in.

Your values and morals are part of what make you unique so if you don't stand up for them who will? Everyone needs something to believe in and we might not all agree, but we need to appreciate the power in standing tall. Be confident in yourself because some of the world already believes in you they are just waiting for you to.

9. Recognize wonder and embrace the mystery.

When you look up at the stars and the moon, remember this is night. This is night and it is okay to not understand how it works. You are allowed to question the night and wonder how you still grow despite the sun leaving you and then returning the next day as if nothing unusual happened. If you can sense any part of this world whether through touch or sight know that this world is full of mystery and you are just a small part of another mystery.

10. Don't forget to grow.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
