I think the majority of Americans are ready to see Tuesdays passing. This year's election has been extremely unlikely, and yet here we are. The uniqueness has changed the demographics of political activists and has brought political attention and concern to American citizens and Non-American citizens alike. No matter the result, Tuesday's outcome has extreme potential to create a lot of very upset people.
However, now is not the time give up on your ideal ideologies. Actually, it is much more important to recognize that political activism does not and cannot end when the last vote is cast. Whether we choose to continue our fight for what we believe in or not, laws will still be passed, less-than-ideal candidates will still be elected, and the American political system will continue in whatever direction it so chooses. If anything the post-election happenings must be of more concern than the preceding. In an article by Russell Moore he stated that "If anything, I’m calling for more engagement in the worlds of politics... It's not a matter of pullback, but of priority." Now is not the time to shy away from your beliefs. Wednesday morning will not be the time to put away your political priorities or to stop urging fellow citizens to speak up and out for the America they want to see.
When the United States was established, it was made clear that We the People have to be active in our government's affairs to make the changes that we want to see and to sustain democracy. It is also an unarguable fact that the feature of any nation falls into the hand's hand of the youth. Joseph Story, Harvard Law School's first dean, once stated: "Let the American youth never forget, that they possess a noble inheritance, bought by the toils, and sufferings, and blood of their ancestors; and capable, if wisely improved and faithfully guarded, of transmitting to their latest posterity all the substantial blessings of life, the peaceful enjoyment of liberty, of property, of religion and of independence... It may, nevertheless, perish in an hour, by the folly or corruption or negligence of its only keepers, THE PEOPLE."
Whether we like it or not, we are this nation's "keepers." Whether we have grown tired by this election season, or are disappointed in our fellow Americans or lawmakers. It does not end here. Now is not the time to "pull back." Please, stay informed and stay active. "If anything, I’m calling for more engagement."
