Snow Daze

With all your schoolwork done, snow days are far less fun.

When the blizzard last week first descended on campus, I was excited. We had gotten out early, and I could do all my homework today and tomorrow without ever leaving the dorm building. However, due to road conditions, presumably, the school was closed Monday. And Tuesday. And Wednesday. I had effectively gotten all my work done Saturday.

It will probably be easier for me, or maybe just more entertaining to walk you through one of those days rather than simply tell you about the experience.

7:45 a.m.: I wake up to my first morning alarm. I sit upright for a moment, look at my prayer journal, and fall back into bed.

8:00 a.m.: My hard wake alarm goes off. Normally, at this point I would have an hour to get ready before heading to breakfast before class. But there isn't class today. I pretend it's the weekend and set a 15-minute alarm...

8:40 a.m.: OK, I'm tired of snoozing, time to actually start doing things.

9:35 a.m.: I trudge down to Boulder, swipe in for the buffet, get something, and sit down. I was glad Boulder was open today; after the blizzard I needed some real food. While I'm eating, the reminder alarm for my first class today starts buzzing on my phone. I swipe it away and go back to YouTube.

10:15 a.m.: I make it back to the dorm, sitting down at my desk with a computer in front of me. ...now what do I do? Check email? Read a book...not for class? Maybe write something? First I should go browse Reddit for a while. It'll be real quick...

11:30 a.m.: Crap.

12:15 p.m.: I sit in the common room, doing some homework. Well, since we don't have class today, I should get started on the homework for next class. We'll have to cover twice the material in one day, so I better make good use of this time. A bunch of other people are sitting in front of the TV, watching some popular show or movie. They're all as stir-crazy as I am. My one friend told me that there was some sort of incident on his side of the floor, and they had to call the police.

1:30 p.m.: While watching a YouTube video, I realize I should probably eat something. I grab some food from my stash and resume playing.

3:35 p.m.: I lean back in my chair. I had done everything I could think of. Internet, YouTube, reading a trashy novel, Internet, playing an online MMO card game, Internet, playing my 3DS, Internet...I had already gotten my snow-frolicking out of the way on Sunday; I built a beautiful snow dog that was vandalized within two hours. I didn't have anywhere else to be or any reason to leave. The good thing is that tomorrow classes would be back on and I would have a purpose to my life once more.

3:40 p.m.: I receive a text message from the school saying classes are closed tomorrow. My mind goes like this:

6:05 p.m.: I meet my friend at Boulder. We had agreed to meet there for dinner for several days in a row: it wasn't like we had other plans. I guess one good thing about everything being canceled is that everyone's just as free as you are. After we eat, we head back to the dorm to play Magic. His deck had really gotten better; he must have spent some of his empty time tweaking it. Or it could have been practice. We've been dueling regularly since this blasted storm began.

7:35 p.m.: I head back inside my dorm room. The computer sits at the table, silently beckoning. ...Well, it wasn't like I had anything better to do.

9:55 p.m.: I emerge from the Internet's numb embrace with a thought...was there something I was supposed to be doing? My mind comes up blank. At the very least I should probably do something else. I'll watch one more video, and then I'll do some writing...

11:30 p.m.: My eyes happen to catch the computer's clock. Welp, time for bed.

12:15 a.m.: As I lay back in my bed, I remember that I was supposed to take a shower tonight. Oh well. I could always do it tomorrow morning. Wasn't like anything would happen tomorrow...

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
