In the south, it's rare that it ever snows, so when it does, it's a huge deal. Less than an inch of snow can cause schools to close because the snow will melt on the roads, then freeze overnight into ice, and then we have no machines to remove the ice so we're stuck at home. Yesterday, there was a chance that there would be snow, so in order to prepare for the “snowpocalypse,” the whole city rushed to the supermarkets to buy necessities.
On a snow day, there's endless possibilities of what you can do! You can sled, build snowmen, make snow angels, and just enjoy the snow! The reality of that is more like sledding on cold, wet grass, building dirty ice-men, making grass angels, and enjoying the thin layer of ice. But snow is so rare that we love sledding on cold, wet grass!
After a nice long day of playing in the ice, we'll head inside for some hot cocoa. Chances are we're pretty sweaty and hot, but we like to pretend that it's cold enough for hot cocoa.
After that we might go back out for round two of playing in the ice, but by then it's usually all melted and all that's left is grass and dirt. Yet, for some reason, we’ll continue to play in the cold wet grass until our fingers and toes are frozen! Sledding down wet grassy hills, climbing cold icy trees, looking at the pile of melted snow where our snowmen stood just hours ago, it's all a dream come true for kids who see snow once a year.
We’ll finish the wonderful day by heading inside to bake some delicious cookies and then face the harsh reality that there will be school tomorrow, and it'll be another year until we see that beautiful white fluffy snow again.
