Most Americans understand the severity of this election, but nothing makes it easier to swallow than Saturday Night Live. The sketch-comedy show makes everything better by helping you laugh at it, especially the 2016 year as a whole. This election is so important, and I have faith that the majority of Americans understand that. However, SNL has received criticism from people regarding their political and election jokes, saying that there is not any laughable aspect of the election.
One thing is for sure, the actors portraying our now-notorious 2016 candidates are incredibly talented and are killing it. Kate McKinnon plays Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and has received many praises for her impression from everyone, including Clinton herself. At the beginning of the election season, Republican candidate Donald Trump was played by Darrell Hammond. His impression was great, but Tina Fey suggested getting actor Alec Baldwin to play Trump, especially since Hammond was plating both Trump and Bill Clinton. Needless to say, Baldwin knocked it out the park with his Trump.
It could be argued that Baldwin’s Trump has elevated SNL’s election sketches. McKinnon’s Clinton has picked fun at the candidate’s mannerisms and confidence in the election. However, many conservative viewers have expressed their discontent with the small jokes on Clinton’s expense and the vast majority of jokes being pointed toward Trump and his campaign.
What do you think about SNL’s jokes? Below are some of the best Cold Opening sketches from this season’s episodes:

When it comes to the ratio of jokes batted at Trump, I’ll admit that it is a vast majority. The problem with SNL is – for die-hard Republican viewers – that it is a widely bias show. But there’s nothing wrong with that. They’ve never advertised themselves as conservative. Not once. And if you listen closely at the beginning of every episode, you pick up that they are live from New York, as in New York City. NYC is one of the most liberal cities in the United States, and the SNL cast and writers have never been ones to shy away from their opinions and views, though making them hysterically funny to watch play out.
SNL shouldn’t be igniting anger between brothers (i.e. Stephen Baldwin vs. his brothers). It should be a way to laugh at the ridiculousness of this election. Yes, this year is immensely important, and its severity is not lost on us. However, there’s always room to laugh at life, especially when we look at how crazy this election has been. It’s one for the history books.
So to people like Stephen Baldwin publicly dissing Alec Baldwin (his own brother) for his Trump impression, see it from another side. If you’re a Trump supporter that is appalled by SNL’s election skits, you don’t have to watch them. They don’t determine the election – they help Americans laugh in this relatively dark time in politics. SNL writers are not about to throw in some conservative view jokes because Republicans don’t find them funny. Their target audience isn’t conservatives, honestly. Don't be a Stephen Baldwin and let it affect your home life.
Upcoming holidays w/my bro's? 4 me it might be turkey w/the Trumps one thing's for sure ... #TrumpTurkeyHug… https://t.co/ML9WaJ3Sr5

So next time you find yourself angry with SNL’s Cold Opening or Trump jokes, just change the channel, mute it and make up your own dialogue, write an angry letter to SNL, or just sit back and find the humor in the honest, transparent jokes about Clinton and Trump. You can be serious all week. Just take Saturday night to truly relax and laugh and the absurdity of American politics today. That’s what I do.
