Snapchat, the social media app that we’ve all grown to love over recent years, has just announced a huge game-changer to the way photo and video sharing will now work. Originally adored because of its temporary tendencies, Snapchat's "Memories" function now presents you with the ability to have your snaps last forever.
Now, I’m sure there are many of you that are absolutely horrified that your ugly selfies to your BFF or your not-so-G-rated mirror pics to your BF are now going to come to the surface. But have no fear – there is a “My Eyes Only” folder that the app will offer for your questionable photos to live.
The change won’t use any photos that previously existed on your camera roll unless you give Snapchat the permission to, according to a blog post by Snapchat. If you are posting an old photo, though, your Snapchat friends will be able to tell by the frame surrounding said photo/video. It’s an easy and effective way to differentiate from the new and the old.
Although it is a huge change to what the original intentions of the app were used for, it’s actually a very exciting change. In all honesty, Snapchat has slowly become the only app that I use. I can see what my friends are up to (almost instantaneously) without having to wait for them to find the time to update a status or edit a photo.
With the new feature, you can practically do everything that Facebook does. You can share old and new photos, still update family and friends on what you’re doing, you can chat, the list goes on. The only thing that Snapchat can’t do now is display where you went to high school – but honestly, who cares about that?
Let’s be honest, Snapchat has probably seen the most (successful) changes out of all of the major social media apps in the last couple of years. From the filters to the chat feature, Snapchat has adapted its technologies to accommodate the ever-changing environment that is the 21st century. It has been widely successful because of their ability to adapt to the new needs and wants of its users, and for that, I will continue using Snapchat as my go-to application for social media.
