Snapchat Generation: What Happened To Texting?

When cell phones became popular, the art of texting soon followed. Texting was highly debated as to whether it was mature or not. Most older adults and elder folks despised texting because they generally thought that calling someone was the thing to do. So while those people contemplated the idea of texting, it grew to drastic amounts. By the time 2010 came around, apple iPhone's became the next best thing along with the new trend of conversation in texts.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but that was ten or so years ago. Now the texting generation is disappearing and we have moved into the Snapchat generation. Yes... Snapchat has now taken over the universe in communication technics. If you were to walk down the street and ask the five people that stroll by if they have a cell phone and if they have a Snapchat account, they would most likely say that they have it and use it often (but let's be honest, we wouldn't talk to strangers and waste valuable time doing a survey). It has taken over the way people communicate with each other and here are a few reasons why it has surpassed texting.

The Vanishing Effect

What people with Snapchat accounts understand is that when a snap is sent it takes at max ten seconds to view. Once that ten or so seconds are up, the pic is gone forever. There are new features to the app now where you could replay the snap sent, but only if you replay it immediately after the first viewing. This is good for everyone because you could go beyond some limits where freedom of camera can be taken and not be used as blackmail afterwards. A great decision by the moderators of Snapchat and people love the attributes... unless you send the snap to the wrong person.

Setting/Atmosphere

People would use Snapchat to let others know some cool settings and places to be. Texting wouldn't show anything freaky, cute, stunning, etc. Most people would send pics while texting but the one receiving it doesn't know if the pic was from a Google search. Snapchat exemplifies FOMO for others if you were snapping lovely places in an exotic country like Italy, Brazil or Portugal. Even snapping the beautiful sunset, the waves crashing on a beech, star gazing at a full moon or being on a side of a cliff show off shocking emotions.

Just Because

Snapchatting your friends is just a fun activity to do. Texting could get so boring going back and forth. When you snap each other, it just brings an uplifting experience for some, seeing different faces, objects, videos, etc. Snapchat is just absolutely entertaining and everyone can get into it, no matter what age.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
