I am a strong believer in the saying “Everything happens for a reason.” I believe that God has a plan for me and my life and I put my trust in him as much as I possibly can. But it is heart wrenching situations that test me and challenge me.

Recently, God has thrown another test towards me and the people of the community and to dear people that I care about. Recently, Mark Smith, a loving member of the Minooka Community was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in his brain.

The Smith family has made such a positive impact in my life and it breaks my heart to see them go through this situation, but through all of this they have reacted with grace and love. My heart is overwhelmed with the amount of love and support from the community because I do not know a more deserving family.

I met Mark Smith through his brother Jake. Being around the Smiths was always fun and exciting. They had positive attitudes and radiated good energy. I was just a sophomore in high school, but I could tell that they were great people. Jess Smith was and is one of the most admirable people I have met. I went into the career center where she worked every resource to do my homework, but mostly hang out with her. She is hilarious and fun and we got along really well. Mark would pop in occasionally and I remember envying their relationship and love. I remember when I found out she was pregnant with Cora. I accidentally found out but I was so excited for them. They were blessed with an amazing little girl who is just as lovely as her parents.

As I grew through high school we always kept contact mostly through Jake. I was around the Smith's throughout high school but they remained just as amazing as they were the first day that I met them. Christi Smith, his mom, I was also around a lot. We have shared a lot of laughs (mostly at Jake), but she is a wonderful human being as well. Hard-working and loving of her children. The other members of the Smiths, Drew and Dionne, I was never around much. I had only met them once, but they seemed pretty great too.

The Channahon, Shorewood & Minooka community never ceases to amaze me in times of heartache. The community has shown endless love and support for this amazing family that deserves the world. We are a strong community and I feel blessed to be a part of it.

To the Smiths—I hope for nothing but the best for you guys and I think of you every single day. You are always in my prayers & I know that God has heard us all. Love you all.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
