1. Convocation

Smith’s Convocation is an amazing kickoff to the fall semester. The event highlights the strength of the Smith community and allows for a celebration of a new year.

2. Mountain Day

Mountain Day is a Smith tradition in which morning bells signal the unexpected cancellation of classes. Many students use this day to spend time and relax with their house members and participate in fun fall activities.

3. Foliage on the Path by Paradise Pond

The beautiful New England foliage livens up the campus in shades of red and oranges. One of the most beautiful spots to see the foliage is the path that runs along Paradise Pond.

4. Fall Foods and Activities

Cider donuts are a festive fall treat coated in cinnamon sugar that can be found at several local businesses near Smith, like Atkins farm! On Mountain Day or a weekend during the fall, many Smithies head to local farms to go apple or pumpkin picking. Chaider, a blend of chai tea and apple cider is a personal favorite fall treat that comes from the Campus Center Café.

5. Family Weekend

Usually one of the last weekends in October, families and friends flood the campus for family weekend. There are so many fun activities to do and taking a break from school work to catch up with loved ones is time well spent.

6. Julia Child Day

Another highly anticipated Smith tradition, Smith College Dining Services celebrates the legacy of Smith alumna Julia Child by preparing elaborate dinners in the dining halls on Julia Child Day.

7. Big Sib Little Sib

Many Smith houses have a tradition of Big Sib Little Sib that takes place during the first few weeks of fall. Older students are secretly assigned "little sibs" and sneakily shower their little sibs with surprises, treats and goodies throughout the week and are later reveled to the little sib during a Big Sib reveal house tea.

8. Otelia Cromwell Day

In early November, Smith hosts a series of events in the afternoon to celebrate the first African American graduate from Smith College, Otelia Cromwell. The workshops and discussions surrounding this day provide a space for growth for all Smithies.

9. Sweater Weather

As the hot summer heat fades away, cool fall breezes make for the perfect sweater weather. All across campus you will find Smithies in dawned in fashionable and cozy sweaters of all shapes and sizes.

10. Celebrations

One of the later fall events, Celebrations is a series of performances that take place in the quad on the steps of Wilson House to show how much Smithies love and accept all forms of love. The event allows groups to come together and creatively express the importance of understanding, compassion and kindness for all identities.

11. Visit from the Dali Lama

This fall Smith College is hosting the Dali Lama on Oct. 23. His Holiness the Dali Lama is making a stop at Smith to speak to the community about “Secular Ethics: Educating for Care and Compassion.”
