Important things to keep in mind to keep yourself happy

Let's face it...College consists of the best, most exciting, and glorious times in our lives. However, it also consists of the most difficult, heartbreaking, and challenging moments as well. From winning football games and making lifelong friends to failing an exam (or in some cases a class) and feeling incredibly homesick, there are so many new experiences that it's hard not to get overwhelmed. Here's a few ways to keep your heart happy through college (and through the rest of your life).

1. Be spontaneous

Try new things, meet unexpected new people, pick up a new hobby. We could all use a little confidence boost and being spontaneous might just be the best way to do that. Wouldn't you rather try something than miss out and always wonder what could have been? Take a risk, travel undiscovered places, go on an adventure. The list never ends.

2. Eat

The freshman 15 may be a reality for some people, but there is no denying that it's next to impossible not to eat like crap in college. Pasta 3 times a day, 7 days a week is a norm for most people and you bet if there is free food on campus you'll be there. Realistically, life is too short to not eat what you want, when you want, and surely how you want. My advice to you is if you're happy, eat. If you're sad, eat. If you're mad, eat. If you are feeling any possible way at all, EAT.

3. Make connections

No, I'm not talking about the missed connections section of Craigslist. I'm referring to the idea that life isn't about what you know, it's about who you know. Get involved in your community, whether that be on campus, a local organization, or your church. There are so many opportunities that are presented if you put yourself out there. Meet new people and stay updated on current events and local gatherings. You never know who or what you may come across that could completely change your life.

4. Love

One of the most important things you will ever do in your life is love. Love your friends, your mom, your friend's mom, your mom's friend, your cat, your dog, your dad, your significant other, love everyone around you. Love them hard and with your whole heart. It's the little things in life that make it all worth it. A little love can go a long way and I promise you it will bring a smile to your face (and theirs). Laugh often, hug often, smile always... You don't know who could need it.

There will always be something in your life that you are not content with. If you are not content with something, then do something about it. So many people live their lives with a single hope in the back of their minds. "If only I had that new car." "I'll be content with my life when I get a new job." "I'll be happy when I have my degree." Since when is happiness a destination? Happiness is a feeling. Be happy. Smile. You never know who might be looking at you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
