I'm A Smick But I Can Still Love Notre Dame

Go Belles... and go Irish!

I'm A Smick But I Can Still Love Notre Dame

I am a Saint Mary's Belle, and I, too, get tired of titling Saint Mary's College as the "school across the street from the University of Notre Dame", but, we Smicks have to admit we love that very same fact as well.

Many of us came to South Bend for the family tradition. Either our mother, grandmother, aunt or sister was a Belle or our dad, uncle, grandfather or brother attended Notre Dame. Some of us came for what the school had to offer. Others, like myself, happened upon it randomly and fell in love. We can't deny that the two are connected, but we also can't deny that they are separate institutions.

One of the greatest benefits we have, being Saint Mary's students, is our connection to the Notre Dame sports. Football season is a big deal in South Bend. We love our Fighting Irish even though the games cause intense anxiety, and we question if we have a defense. Being able to hold student season tickets as Saint Mary's students is awesome — we get to enjoy the game next to our fellow Belles or a Notre Dame student. Sports equate us.

Don't get me wrong. I love my fellow Belles, but sometimes being around girls 24/7 is a bit overwhelming. Having Notre Dame across the street and a male population is a necessary change of scenery. It's a breath of fresh air. Having guy friends across the street is another added benefit of being connected with Notre Dame.

There are a lot of great things that being connected to Notre Dame can offer from clubs, sports, friends and other social endeavors. It is frustrating sometimes to feel as though Saint Mary's is in the shadow of Notre Dame, but when you look closely, both institutions have a lot to offer one another. Go Irish and go Belles!

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
