Smart Phones and Dumb People

We call this media social, but it is anything but.

Smart Phones and Dumb People

I came across this video when falling victim to wasting endless hours scrolling through social media a couple years ago and it impacted my life on such a deep level. We all 'like' and 'favorite' peoples' pictures and posts, but don't give them expression of love in a real world. I wanted to highlight some specific phrases that stood out to me in this awesome video:

"I speak to all of them everyday, yet none of them really know me."

We interact with our "friends" behind a bright screen and comment on each other's status updates, but what happened to meeting up for coffee to share something significant with someone special rather than just posting about it on Facebook?

"This media we call social is anything but, when we open our computers and it's our doors we shut."

Most of us like to maintain our social profile and appearance, shouldn't maintaining and upholding our relationships by investing what little time we already have in engaging with our loved ones be even more important?

"Where we all share out best bits, but leave out the emotion."

No one has any problems sharing their glory moments online and keeping their misfortunes somewhat hidden...what about the intimacy that comes from channeling every up and down face to face with a dear friend?

"It's not very likely you'll make world's greatest dad if you can't entertain a child without using an iPad."

What world have we come to where we shove electronics in children's faces to keep them occupied instead of spending time fostering a relationship and playing outside?

"The time you don't have to tell hundreds of what you've just done, because you want to share this moment with just this one."

How truly special is an important moment if it's spent capturing it for the sake of posting a snapchat story versus embracing every second in real time?

"The time you take in all you’ve made just by giving life attention, and how you’re glad you didn’t waste it looking at some invention."

Don't look back on a family road trip and remember the countless and pointless tweets you scrolled through over the trees, blue skies, and memorable moments shared with people around you.

"Give people your love, don't give them your like."

Nothing is more valuable than showing your love to someone in real time. Don't be the antisocial social media addict.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
