A Smart College Kids Guide To Hosting Your Parents In Oxford

So many students' families often visit them in Oxford, and since that's the case I feel like everyone should have a guide to hosting.

The Oxford and Ole Miss community is very family oriented. Many families often visit their kids multiple times throughout the semester, so I feel that it is very important to provide a "Smart College Kids Guide to Hosting your Parents in Oxford." Whether the family is coming down for a football game, parents weekend or just a visit, there are a few places you definitely need to take them. Now keep in mind the title of this article: it's a "smart" college kids guide.

With that being said, the very first stop you should hit up when your parents are in town is an always popping place: the gas station. Your parents will definitely want to see your go-to last stop in Oxford before you do any traveling. Plus, ballin on a college kids budget is never easy, and we all know the struggle of leaving that gas light on till the last second possible. Just make sure to line that up with when the family is in town, and you're golden!

The next spot that you should always check out is the grocery store. Walmart, Kroger or even a trip to Trader Joes. This shows your parents where you spend way too much time (since college kids suck at grocery shopping and take 3 trips that could have been 1.) As I said previously, as college kids we know how to survive off very little. That applies to what is in our fridge as well, but why settle for that when your parents are in town to provide you with weeks of healthy, nutritious alternatives?

Another place you should hit up is your favorite steak place. Your parents may actually enjoy this one because who doesn't love good food? And Oxford has plenty of it! Steak is very important in our diets as college kids but unfortunately doesn't always comply with our bank accounts. However, that is not a worry when the fam is here!

Last but not least you should hit up The Library. This one is always a winner because initially, your parents are so proud of you for wanting to take time to show them where you spend all your time studying, even though they may get mad at the actual outcome, it works out like an open bar for you!

What a weekend your parents will have visiting you in your college town and what a next few you will have due to this smart guide!

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
