Small Town Girl Gone Country

I went to a dairy farm for spring break

Field Notes from Fatherhood

During my freshman year of college, I met a lot of people and not all of them stayed my friends, and I probably hated some of them but that's part of college. You meet people from backgrounds you've never imagined and make new friends. I met someone from my sorority who I initially didn't like because she reminded me of someone mean from high school, but she was so friendly and outgoing that I had to like her. During spring break, a lot of people went on amazing adventures and I didn't have any big plans until that sorority sister asked me to go to a farm with her, her boyfriend, and his friend. I was excited to get to know her more and have a more exciting spring break, so I said yes. I don't know what I was expecting, but that wasn't it. We drove for a really long time and listened to country music the entire way which was kinda out of my element, but I got used to it. When we got to the farm, it was dark and my first impression was that it was a really old house and it was probably haunted because I'm just that type of irrational person. The boys and girls had different rooms and the parents slept downstairs. I didn't want to shower because I wanted to be able to see better and I didn't trusts the bathroom yet because the bedroom had a lot of cobwebs that we got her boyfriend to clean up a little. He also killed some spiders. This house was different and probably much older than anywhere I had ever slept before so it was a little hard to fall asleep, but my sister always goes to bed early, so I tried to fall asleep, too. The next day we ate breakfast with her boyfriends parents and walked up a gigantic hill which happened to be in the middle of a cow pasture. This was my first experience with cows. I didn't know them charging at us would be a concern, but it was. When we finally got to the top of the hill, I was so out of breath and I felt like the laziest city girl they had ever seen so we sat down to catch our breath before we took cliche, but amazing, sorority pictures in front of the amazing view. Then we walked down the hill which sounded like a lot of work for me but what else do you do on a dairy farm? I have no idea. The next adventure happened the next day where we climbed some rocks and looked inside a tiny cave, but decided not to go in because it smelled a little like a skunk. The rock climbing was probably my favorite part of the trip because I knew I liked rock walls and making it to the top of an actual rock formation felt really cool and brave. The last day we hiked up that horrible hill again and took more pictures and sat in hammocks until the mosquitoes came out. Then we walked back down the hill and the funniest thing happened. We walked in a generally single file line with the boyfriend's friend in front, then the boyfriend, then me, and finally my sister. We were wearing rain boots so it was fine to walk through this big mud patch but it was hard when our boots sank in so the boyfriend said, "don't follow me" and I heard so I got out of the mud but my sister didn't so she walked into the middle where it was so deep that she couldn't pick her feet up to get out. I thought it was absolutely hilarious, but her boyfriend had to trudge back through the mud. He picked her up out of her boots, held her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes, yanked her boots out of the mud, placed them on the side of the mud patch and finally carried her out far enough that she could put her boots on and keep walked. The entire time I was dying of laughter. That was the funniest part of the trip. At the end, we listened to country music all the way home and I actually knew some of the songs. It was a great bonding expierence, and now I still love my sorority sister and she's one of my best friends.

When I was learning how to talk, I was taught both Portuguese and English at the same time. In elementary school, I started taking mandatory Spanish classes, which I did well in because of my knowledge of Portuguese. Then in high school, on top of taking Spanish, I also started taking French. Now, in college, already fluent in English and Portuguese, I'm in the process of becoming fluent in Spanish, and I have a standard high school level understanding of French.

I am without a doubt one of those people who refuses to start decorating for Christmas or listen to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, Thanksgiving has become an underrated holiday over the years. You barely see any Thanksgiving decorations in stores; it's like they skip right from Halloween to Christmas.

Some universities only get two or three days off for Thanksgiving break. Or, if your university is like mine, you get the whole week off go go home. A whole week off is a long time. I'm not complaining, because I'd rather have a whole week off than three days, but there is a lot of down time. Here are some ideas as to what you can do to get the most out of your Thanksgiving break.
