6 Reasons Small Towns Have The Best Celebrations

We all have our favorite small towns, and our favorite small town attributes. The best attribute in my book is the small town celebration. If you haven't discovered this hidden gem, there's still a lot of summer left! I might be a little bias, though.

I grew up in a small town, smack dab in the middle of small towns, so there is no limit on the number of small town celebrations I could go to when I was a kid. Anyone whose ever been a part of these celebrations knows that we know how to party.

I give to you the six reasons why small town celebrations really are the best:

1. Everyone Knows Everyone

My dad's cousins high school best friend graduated with my aunt and she practically knows me because she's friends with my mom on Facebook and sees all the pictures she shares of me.

Every year you meet more people who know you, but that you didn't know existed. So much for a small town?

2. Two Words: Street Dances

If you live in South Dakota, you've heard of the Artesian Street Dance for sure, and more than likely the Chester Street Dance right after that.

The Artesian Street Dance has been famous in South Dakota for it's incredible amount of people that flock to it every year. It's generally pretty famous for being shut down by natural weather causes too like nearby tornadoes.

3. Alcohol

How do I follow up street dances with anything other than alcohol?

Have you ever seen your high school science teacher drunk and dancing? After your town celebration, you probably have. These moments, all made possible by none other, than alcohol.

4. Food.

ALL THE FOOD.

Pie baking contest? Chislic? Funnel cakes? Deep fat fried oreos? And of course we can't forget the parade candy! Oh and for just this weekend, alcohol counts as a food group.

By time the weekend is over, you'be gained ten pounds in all the wrong places. Come Monday morning you better start your cardio again.

5. Getting the Gang Back Together

You've been gone to separate colleges for far too long, but now you're finally back together for a weekend shenanigans all over again. It's high school all over again.

6. Bingo

This one is a classic. This is a staple at our town celebration, and a pretty competitive one at that. It's a mix between, 'how many bingo cards can I really manage at once?', and 'how the hell did they win again?'

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
