Empowering others can be hard when you are just human yourself. We all have a story, and that is the important thing to remember. So how do we empower others when we have our own battles we're fighting? Really, there is no right or wrong answer. It is the answer that is within your own body and your gut feeling. So here are some tips to make someone's day a little brighter, even when you're struggling with your own battles.

1. Smile.

It is that simple. When you're walking to class, to work, riding the bus, etc. Just smile at others. It really lightens up your mood as well as affects other people in a positive light.

2. Ask someone how they are doing.

When you are getting groceries at the store, buying coffee, or shopping at a bookstore, just ask "How are you doing today?" It really does not take that much effort, but it makes people feel like they are someone, and allows them to feel worthy.

3. When someone tells you they are having a bad day. Ask why.

They are obviously telling you, because they need someone to talk to. Just listen, it could make a huge difference in their lives.

4. Do a random act of kindness.

Even if it's buying someone a coffee in front of you, leaving someone a post-it-note, etc. it is really the little things in life that matter. Just give it a go!

5. Give someone a compliment.

When giving someone a compliment it can be anything. However, I try to relate the comment to themselves as a person and not by physical appearance. Such as, "You have such nice energy", "Your soul shines so bright", or "You are so smart!".

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
