13 Things That Happen When You Go To A Small School In Northwest Indiana

In This Article:

Living in a small town and going to a small school is fun and hard at the same time. Everyone knows everything about you and your life story but at the same time, it's annoying having everyone know everything about you. You can't ever be alone because you will always see someone you know whether that is at school or at the store. Here are 13 things that happen in small schools in Indiana.

You drive your tractor to school on the last day of school

On the last day of school every year, everyone drives their tractor to school and parks it in the parking lot to show off. Elementary kids look forward to being able to drive their tractor one day to show off their tractor. Some people that don't have a tractor will drive their lawn mower to school to be funny.

Everyone knows everyone and their brother

Literally, everyone knows everyone. Whether your the youngest or oldest in your family, everyone from school knows you already. It's honestly kinda scary how many people know you without completely knowing them.

You have your teachers phone numbers and know where they live

https://media.giphy.com/media/8rFgASdsaiRXO9M9q5/giphy.gif

At a small school like I went to, we only had 56 kids in my graduating class which means that in a classroom, there were only 15-20 students in each class. As we got older, we became closer with our teacher and eventually, they gave us their phone numbers in case we needed something. Being in a small town, we also knew where some of our teachers lived since everyone knows everyone and their brother.

Teachers have an impression of you before you walk in the room because they taught your siblings

If your the oldest in your family, you know that you will make an impression for your siblings before your teachers even know them. Being in such a small school lets teachers hear conversations and know a lot of things about your family or siblings.

You play a couple sports because there are not enough people

https://media.giphy.com/media/bNm1yuDTJq944/giphy.gif

If your good at one sport, you are most likely pulled into another sport. Since we had a small school, there weren't a lot of people to play so we had to convince people to play or teach them how to play.

You might see your teachers and friends at the store

https://media.giphy.com/media/5pPE4JKo5fub6/giphy.gif

No matter what store you go to at any time, you will always see at least one person from school, whether that it a classmate or teacher. Having this in mind, you have to be on your best behavior because you never know who is watching.

Gossip spreads fast and before you know it, the whole school knows it

https://media.giphy.com/media/5yLgoc7NuyKE9aHTEGY/giphy.gif

Whether something happened with your boyfriend or girlfriend and you or if you had a fight with your best friend, everyone in the school will know about it eventually. You better be careful who you tell things to, because people will be talking about it before you know it.

You don’t need to text your friends during class because they are either in your class or you will see them in the hallway during passing period

https://media.giphy.com/media/9fgUz9JDpXkFG/giphy.gif

First off, my school had no service to begin with, but all your friends are in your classes with you and if they aren't then you will see them in the hallway so there is no reason to have your phone. The hallways are so small that you won't miss each other.

You become friends in grades above you and below you

https://media.giphy.com/media/3oKIPnGIQmdQEtIfbG/giphy.gif

Since there aren't a lot of people in a graduating class, you can get sick of the people in your grade pretty easily. The solution to this is to become friends with people below you and above you. It is more fun to have friends that are in different grades so there are a lot of different people to hang out with.

When someone new comes, their life story gets spread around the school

https://media.giphy.com/media/1FrWQObjawyXK/giphy.gif

A lot of people at my school started there in elementary school. I, on the other hand, moved there in middle school. I have witnessed this first hand. When someone is new, everyone talks about you before you get there and then when they meet you they talk to you and realize their speculation about you is wrong. Once you have been there for awhile, everyone knows everything about you, it seems like.

Senior pranks come with big consequences

https://media.giphy.com/media/1g7VaRpaZ1rlS/giphy.gif

Being at a small school, if we did a senior prank we would not be able to walk at graduation. Since there was only about 700 kids kindergarten through 12th grade, there were a lot of issues with partaking in a senior prank.

You know the kid sitting next to you at graduation since elementary school

https://media.giphy.com/media/dj4btvXnZD7wI/giphy.gif

Since everyone goes to the school from kindergarten through 12th grade, everyone knows everyone and the fact that we only have 56 kids in a graduation class, we know the people sitting around us. It is nice knowing the people sitting around us during graduation so we can share the last memories of high school together.

Your ex is also your best friend's ex and your brother's ex's little brother.

Okay, this one sounds crazy but once you live with it for awhile it is normal. Our school is small and people in high school especially date at least a couple of people and most of those people are from your grade. A lot of people date someone and then when they break up, their friend starts dating that person. Its crazy but we are all used to it at this point so we have learned to deal with it.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
