Small School Bigger Blessing

It Really Is A Small World

Small School Bigger Blessing
University Of Hartford

In High school I could have never imagined going to a small private university. I always wanted to go to a school like you see in the movies. With big Tailgates and huge frat houses. With so many people you couldn’t possibly know everyone. But that is not exactly how it turned out for me, my parents thought the best move for me was to go to a community college for two years and then try and get into one of those big schools I dreamed about. But I knew that was not my plan that was not what was supposed to do or wanted to do. So I set out on a mission to find a school I wanted and my parents also wanted. I was applying to schools like Arizona, Costal Carolina and many other schools like that.

The day I decided to apply to the University Of Hartford it was kind of on a limb. My friend had told me about this program that the University offered that she thought I might be interested in so I figured why not. I applied and did not think much of it for a few months, until the day that I got my acceptance letter. Over the couple months span it takes to apply and hear back I decided I know longer wanted to go a plan ride away. I still wanted my dream school but just less of a plane ride and more of a drive.

As soon as I got accepted my mom set up a day for me her and my other friend to go on a tour. I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about it considering I did not know much about the University at the time. I went on the tour and my mom was thrilled she loved the school and so did I. I just still couldn’t get the idea of a big University out of my head. But I decided to commit to the University of Hartford and start my journey. The summer going into my first semester of freshman year I thought I might transfer after my two years in my specific program was up, but that was not the case.

I fell in love with this place, it became my home away from home and has remained that way for the last 3 years. Now being a senior I could never imagine what my freshman self was thinking wanting to go to a big school. University Of Hartford has been my biggest blessing, I have met the most amazing people and have never felt so free to be myself at any school before. Walking around campus you can guarantee you will see at least 3 people you know on your short 5 minute walk to class. So to all you High school seniors don’t be afraid to stray from what you thought you always wanted, don’t be afraid to visit the schools you can’t picture your self-attending. Don’t be afraid to not attend a Big 10 school. There is a school out there for everyone and I was lucky enough to find mine at the University Of Hartford.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
