A Small Guide On How To Improve Your Life

Life can get boring, but it doesn't have to stay that way.

A Small Guide On How To Improve Your Life
California Through My Lens

"You must give everything to make your life as beautiful as the dreams that dance in your imagination." - Roman Payne.

Ever wake up in the morning feeling not-so-satisfied with how your life is going? Sure, you're happy and nothing is actually wrong or out of the ordinary, but it's the same routine every day. Wake up. Make coffee. Burn the toast. Briefly watch the news. Hastily get ready for work. Slave the day away at work. Get off late. Find yourself too lazy to cook dinner. Pick up take out. Fast forward through the Bachelor. Sleep. Rinse and repeat. Doesn't that get boring? Do you ever find yourself asking "isn't there more to this life?"

I know I do. And I know I get bored easily. I don't get bored as in, I-have-all-this-free-time-and-I-don't-know-what-to-do bored. I get bored because I am constantly doing the same things over and over again.

I am a wanderer- I like getting myself lost in situations and finding my way out, metaphorically and realistically speaking. I am a feeler- I like to feel on top of the world, like nothing can break me. I like to feel the shattering Earth, like i'm at my lowest of lows. And when life gets boring, I don't feel anything anymore. I feel... empty, if you will. I feel like a body, on Earth, just here. Doing body things, but not actually living. So when life gets boring, I wander. I change directions. Whether that be with my current activities or hobbies, or the group of people I surround myself with, I redirect my path of life and get lost all over again.

Because i'm so tired of feeling spiritless and not complete, I decided to make a change, and not just a little one.

Here is a (small but definitely full) list on how to drastically change your life, and your journey here on Earth.

1. Smile more.

Seriously just smile more. At people you pass on the street, the guy behind the counter at the deli, the business man in the car that just cut you off. Practice smiling at yourself, even. Just smile. Your insides will start to reciprocate that smiley feel and you'll begin to notice the changes.

2. Journal your thoughts.

I know what you're thinking. A diary is not for me, and and never will be. I don't mean to sit there and right down how you're feeling, and what happened to you every day this week. You had a cool dream and it woke you up in the middle of the night? Journal it. Your friend made you feel like an awesome individual and role model? Journal what was said and how that made you feel. Just write down the interesting, and cool things that happen in your life. Also make sure to write down the moments that got you down, and how you plan to not let that happen again.

3. Take up a physical activity.

Go for a weekly Sunday-sunset hike. Join a spin or Pilates class. The main idea is to just get up and do something. If working out isn't your forte, don't get a gym membership. But do make it a point to be active throughout your week. It's good to sweat and let out those bad toxins.

4. Read more.

Just recently I ordered 5 books off of Amazon to read throughout the next couple months. Some are self-help, some are fictional, and some just had a crazy author named Amy Schumer so I figured i'd give it a shot. Regardless of what genre of books you may enjoy, you should pick out a couple and make it a goal of yours to finish all of them. Instead of watching The Bachelor every Monday night, why don't you spend that hour reading? Your mind will thank you for it, and I guarantee you'll feel much more relaxed.

5. Go on more road trips.

Getting out of your house and the big city will always be a good thing. Look up restaurants in the cities 2 hours from where you live, and go out for dinner. See if there is a museum or a scenic hike in that town a couple hours north. The drive there will give you time to be alone and with yourself, or to have deep, rooted conversations with those you love. And getting out of the city and out of your constant surroundings will leave you feeling refreshed and new.

6. Find a job you love.

Some of us are still in school and are not yet qualified to get an office job or move up in our careers. However, we are in total control of how much we enjoy our part time or full jobs. For me, if I didn't look forward to waking up at 4:30 am every Sunday morning to go serve coffee and pour love into those around me, I wouldn't be happy with my life. But because I love the job I have, enjoying life is that much easier. If you're unhappy where you work, quit. Do not hesitate that decision for one minute.

This list is simple, yet it does wonders. The littlest changes in your life really do make a difference.

Take a step back from your boring or unfilled life. Decide to make a change and see through it.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
