Yes, I was a slutty cat for Halloween, but here is why I'm not ashamed.
Slutty Halloween costumes are nothing new. Halloween is the one time of year where girls (or boys) can prance around in lingerie and society has to keep its judgmental mouth shut. However, there is still a lot of stigma around slutty Halloween costumes. Considering it is 2016 I am amazed at the amount of criticism people get for wearing slutty costumes.
Now, don't get me wrong, I am completely for fun and family friendly Halloween costumes. I love seeing creative costumes that obviously had a lot of effort put into them. The movie characters, milk cartons, and Ramen Noodle packet costumes are the heart of Halloween. Everyone wants to have an original costume that is equally innovative and hilarious. However, if someone feels comfortable and confident walking around in a mini skirt and ambiguous animal ears, then who am I to judge them? As long as the person wearing the costume feels comfortable and isn't being culturally offensive, then I don't see a problem.
My roommate and I both went as black cats for Halloween. While we were out, we ran into at least twenty other people, male and female, dressed up like black cats. While usually having the same costume as someone causes distress, for us, it was celebrated! Dressing up like a cat is like dressing up as a witch or a vampire- it's classic Halloween. I knew I was going to see several other people in a similar get up and I was fine with it. It was almost like a community. Every other person dressed like a cat that saw us would yell something along the lines of 'hey! another black cat!' and then would proceed to high five us or give an appreciative nod.
I feel like I learned a lot by dressing up as a slutty cat. I learned, first and foremost, that you can never go wrong with a slutty cat costume. I don't care what anyone says, it is classic and you don't have to explain it to anyone, and we all know there is nothing worse than having to explain your costume. I also learned that Halloween is about having a good time with good friends and at the end of the day it doesn't matter what you dressed up as. If you are surrounded by your friends and enjoying yourself, then that is all that matters.
So I'm glad I dressed like a slutty cat. I learned a lot and was able to have an amazing time with my friends without judgement. So, if you want to dress up like a slutty cat, or anything else, for Halloween, I say go for it. Have fun and, no matter what you dress up as, have confidence in yourself.
