Why I am not doing NaNoWriMo

Sleepless In November: My Thoughts on National Novel Writing Month
Gene Wilbrun

NaNoWriMo or Nano (as I will be addressing it in this article) or National Novel Writing Month. I am proud to be able to openly say that I am no participating in that madness. The goal of which is to write a 500,000 word novel in a month. I would love to be able to do it and full dedicate myself to ignoring everything around me, but I do not think in the slightest that my college Grade Point Average would appreciate me ignoring my classes for a month to write. I cannot afford too do that.

NaNo takes place in the month of November and started at ten in the morning today. If I were to participate in NaNo, like the rest of the writers in the world, I would need a year to plot out the novel I plan to write for next National Novel Write Month. If you, my dear reader think I am joking. NaNo has a freaking website and provides tips for preparing to disappear into the void of ink stained hands and finger cramps during the months of October and September. Click on this sentence for the link to National Novel Writing Month website, nanowrimo.org.

I would love to participate and doing NaNoWriMo is on my bucket list, but at the moment, with College, it is not the best time. I have no clue why November is National Novel Writing Month, but you can write a novel in a month any month out of the year. November is just when everyone and their mother is doing it. I'm not even sure if participants get anything out of NaNo, other than a novel they wrote in a month. NaNo, by the way, Involves coming out of November with a fully edited ready to publish novel that has everything but a publisher and title art. NaNo is crazy as hell, Y'all. I wish I could be doing it, but I cannot feasibly participate without failing out of College and between having a full novel and keeping my grades up. I pick keeping my grades up every time.

I am not saying nobody should do NaNoWriMo, do it if you want too, it's insanely fulling to write a novel as I have heard, but at times it seems insane. 500,000 words about three novels. Doing NaNo is writing 16,129 words each day and that is about 40.5 pages in Times New Roman 12 point font with Single Spaces. Writing is intensely time consuming wither or not you are trying to write a book in a month or not. Personally, I believe that the writing process should be enjoyed and nobody should need to stress about trying to factor writing 16,129 words into their day.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
