Sleeping My Way Through Europe

The definitive ranking of all the places that I slept in Europe this summer.

As many of you know, I spent the summer in Europe. While I was mainly studying, I did take a few trips (Paris, Malaga, Hamburg, Dresden, etc.). I am providing the definitive ranking of all of the places I slept this summer.

11. Hostel in Paris.

Perfect Hotel & Hostel

I do not really remember this one, so that is a shame. I was visiting a friend in Paris and she was arriving the next day, so I needed a place for one night. The fact that Season 4 of "House of Cards" was available in France made my day. It was otherwise not memorable. That's good, right?

10. The bus to Frankfurt.

FlixBus

I was leaving Germany and I took a four-hour bus ride to Frankfurt where I was flying out of the country. It was a difficult trip. I woke up every time we stopped – which was way too often. At least I had a window seat, that was really nice.

9. My cardboard bed.

Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of my bed. It was quite something. One afternoon, I visited a friend in her dormitory about 50-55 minutes from my apartment. We decided to go into town for drinks. The buses do not run after midnight and I felt bad for her to walk back by herself and since my bed gives XL Twins a good name, we could not share it. I created a bed out of all of the cardboard that I did not throw away. I then put my dirty clothes over it and then wrapped myself in my ENO (it is like a hammock). More comfortable than one would think.

8. Hostel in Frankfurt

Frankfurt Hostel

It would have been a nice hostel except the room was smaller than anticipated and I only slept like three hours. It was difficult to put the sheets on the bed and all that jazz since it was a top bunk. That happens a lot.

7. Random Paris hotel.

I visited Paris in early May with a friend from university. The lovely establishment that we slept in was quite something. When we lifted up the mattresses, we saw all sorts of nice stains that were a little too dark if they had been cleaned at all (read: they were not cleaned well). It was not the worst accommodation I have ever had because it was a physical bed but by far the worst I remember (sorry other Paris hostel). I am not going to post a picture out of respect for the establishment. Maybe our room was the exception?

6. Dresden hostel

A&O Dresden

I took a cultural trip to Dresden with some international students from my German university. The bed would have been more comfortable if I got more than 2 hours of sleep. I got in extremely late and we had to wake up super early to go to another town.

5. Hamburg hostel.

A&O Hamburg

It was a standard hostel. It was a little toasty since Germans don’t do the whole A/C thing. I got the top bunk bed and enjoyed sweating in my bed. I was grateful for a place to stay though.

4. Munich Airbnb

Bohemian Art - Airbnb

I coordinated a visit with another friend from university to see a Waka Flocka Flame concert in Munich. We corresponded via Facebook Messenger and selected a lovely Airbnb that was very Bohemian. It would have ranked higher had the Wi-fi actually worked. I only slammed my head into the low door frame once.

3. Hostel in Malaga

Feel Hostel

I love technology, who does not? I can think of a few… anyways, this hostel did not have functioning had inconsistentWi-Fi and none of my friends and I had Spanish data plans, so that sucked. The best part of the hostel was the ladder to the top bunks. They were not mounted; bed time was a great time of shifting one’s weight so as to not bang the ladder against the bed.

2. My bed in Bayreuth.

Even though my bed was microscopic, it was a great time. It was by far the smallest bed that I have seen in person. It did not come with a pillow and I was lazy – I waited five days before I got one. Overall, it did the job.

1. Munich Airbnb #2

Sunny & Central & Calm Room Airbnb

This was by far the best bed that I slept on in Europe. It was very comfortable. The only problem was the good bit of light that came in through the windows. Overall though I would recommend this establishment. The couple that rented it were very kind and made some great cookies.

I had a wonderful opportunity to explore many new places this summer. A comfortable bed can make or break a trip! Fortunately, I had some awesome company and made a lot of great memories. Glad I got the chance to sleep around some while I was in Europe! Always can use some sleep.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
