I return to my bed at night
and find that its left the same way
I left it this morning.
The familiar curve of the mattress
where my tired body lay,
untouched
only for me to return home
where my blankets catch my sighs
from across the room.
I don't want to return to my small bed,
that will soon cradle my body into
a restless sleep.
Watch as I reluctantly drag my feet
back to bed,
where I'll collapse into the space
where the mattress dips downward.
It wins again,
retrieving a lover who has no more energy to love
until she dreams
as sleep is the only place
where she is willing to give it away again.
