How To Sleep Better: The 10, 3, 2, 1, 0 Method

Being a working college student, I understand how it feels to have a lack of sleep. It sucks. I'm just lethargic, practically brain dead, and aggravated the entire day. Sometimes, it isn't even because I'm busy with something overnight. Sometimes it's because I physically cannot sleep, which is definitely worse.

On those days, I'm in bed, but I'm constantly tossing and turning and wishing my brain could shut down for just the couple of hours I need so I can feel refreshed in the morning. And, like many of you, I look up tips on how to naturally sleep better, some of which work while others don't.

Well, this is one tip that definitely works and it surprised me when I first heard and read about it because honestly it's so simple. It's called the "10, 3, 2, 1, 0 method." Shout-out to 97.9 WRMF's KVJ show!

Here's how it works, and trust me, some of the steps will definitely take some discipline:

1. No more caffeine 10 hours before bed.

This, for me personally, is one of the easiest steps. I love having a strong cup of tea in the morning, but I'm usually done with caffeinated tea by noon. Ever heard that caffeine can stay in your system for eight hours? Well, I'm guessing the extra two hours allows your body to extra relax.

2. No more food and alcohol three hours before bed.

This is the hardest for me. I. Love. Food. Love it. On days when I follow this, however, I sleep the best. Why is that? When you eat three hours before bed, it forces your digestive system to work when it should be taking a break. This keeps your brain active as you sleep, meaning it never gets to rest.

3. No more work two hours before bed.

It's the same as the previously mentioned. Let your brain sleep and you'll be able to sleep.

4. No more electronics one hour before bed.

I think this is pretty simple. Just take a break by letting your brain do the same. Screens and electronic devices keep your brain active. So find something else to do! Read a book, meditate or do some yoga. The possibilities are endless, and you'll get a great amount of sleep.

And finally...

5. Hit that snooze button zero times in the morning.

Yes, another hard one. I totally understand because I do this too, but don't. The fact is, it is possible to oversleep, which just makes you more tired. I know that seems odd, but it's the truth. Just don't hit that button!

Now, this method won't work overnight (pun intended) but if you follow through with it then within the next couple of weeks, you'll feel the difference a whole lot more. Just try it out for a good three weeks. What do you have to lose? Besides the obvious food and margaritas that you can no longer enjoy right before bed.

Did this work for you? Or do you have other methods and tips to offer? Share them in the comments below!

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.
