Hello people of earth!
Today I want to tackle a topic of a more serious nature; human trafficking. On my college campus I work at a student run office that plans and facilitates community service opportunities for our students. Currently, I am working on an on-campus event to raise awareness about human trafficking. I have been working closely with an intern from the Florida Coalition Against Human Trafficking, to put on this event. From working on this event I have learned that more people today are forced into slavery than at any other time in the history of the world. Currently, there are approximately 20.9 million people enslaved throughout the world with 2.5 million located right here in the United States (Florida Coalition Against Human Trafficking). When I think about that fact, it makes me sick to my stomach. That is a staggering number of people, and the general population is blind to it. My event on my campus is to try to get more people educated about this huge issue. I know some of you are sitting there in front of your computers thinking "Woah, that's terrible. Its probably not happening where I live though". Well that is where you would be wrong, human trafficking does not know any boundaries.
Another thing I would like to address is that when I say "human trafficking" most peoples brains jump directly to the sex trafficking side. What most people don't know is that there are some people that are being forced into involuntary labor. This means that people are basically being sold as in house slaves. They are forced to work ridiculous hours and preform laborious acts and in turn are literally compensated for nothing.
Together was can all end slavery, but that cant happen if no one knows whats going on. So step up, share what you've learned and make the difference. Nothing will change if we continue to live as we always have.
