Dating in today's society has changed from 1998. Back in the day, dating was actually getting in a vehicle and taking your significant other out somewhere and having them home by the curfew her father set. Now, dating has many different meaning and young adults use many different terms to describe their relationships and love life.
1. Bae
Young adults today have numerous "baes". This term means 'before anyone else.' It might sound crazy to have more than one, but most people have several. Being called bae does not mean that you are in a relationship with or really even talking to the other person involved. It simply means that you and the other person are both interested in each other but not willing to let go of your "hoes". According to Brie Jones, freshman at Newberry College, she would rather be called baby over bae any day of the week because she knows bae means nothing.
2. Talking
Talking is simply that. Talking. This is the stage that many teens and young adults enter for a decent period of time before they decide to be in a relationship. In my opinion, talking is something that teens and young adults should skip. According to some freshman, it means that the two individuals are in the process of dating.
3. Jelly
This term is not the everyday peanut butter sandwich condiment. This means that one is jealous of another. Using this word can start an argument if needed based on the fact that it is not something that people like to be called or even thought of as. Nobody likes to be called jelly because I mean well who would want that?
4. THOT
"That ho over there" is what THOT stands for. This slang is universal. Anyone can be called a THOT. A THOT could be the person you hooked up with the night before.
5. Wifey Material
This means that a girl has qualities that the other person is interested in and would want to lock down. This is for things other than physical appearance. One may not be super hot, but they can be wifey material because they do the little things to spoil the other person.
6. Slow fade
This is probably one of my favorite words. This means that the person is slowly ceasing from talking to the other. They cease communication with them. It isn't like cutting someone off completely, it is like slowly fading away and out of the picture.
7. Baby
A term we used to address our significant other. Baby boy/girl are common names. Baby is something that most people like to be called instead of Bae.
8. Cuffing Season
Cuffing season is when people start rushing to get into relationships and find that certain significant other to hangout with. Cuffing season is between Halloween and Valentine's day when everyone is in a relationship, and when Starbucks rolls out the red cups.
9. Jailbait
This is the slang for when you see someone who is attractive and you want to be with but they are under the age of 18. In the state of South Carolina someone under the age of 18 is illegal to have sexual conduct with.
10. Wingman
A wingman is a term that guys use. This means it is a guy who helps another brother get with a female. It is just someone who helps them get involved with a girl they find cute or attractive.
11. Creep
A creep is someone who tries to get the attention of a girl without actually telling her, thus making her disinterested in him.
All in all, teens and young adults use these words because they don't want to have actual labels. Slang is always fun when it is used right, but sometimes it is used in the wrong way and it can always make people feel bad.
