College is supposed to be the time of your life, and being fit has many more benefits than simply looking your best. Eating well and exercising consistently improves mood, increases energy and reduces stress. Over the past year and a half, I have committed myself to getting into shape and staying that way. Here are some of my tips for taking advantage of a college setting to get in shape.
1. Cut soda and energy drinks from your diet.
Recent scientific studies and statistics are showing that soda is one of the leading causes of obesity in the U.S. They have a deceivingly large amount of sugar and caffeine that only harms your body. Despite diet sodas seeming like a better option, they can have very similar long-term effects on your body. Try opting for water, tea (unsweetened!!) or coffee next time.
2. Don't skip breakfast!
You have probably heard "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" a thousand times, and that is because it is! Breakfast gets your body's metabolism revved up for the day. If you are in a hurry, at least grab a granola bar or fruit; as long as you get something to start your day.
3. Hit the gym.
This one should be pretty obvious. If you want to get in shape you need to work your butt off in the gym (Or do the exercise of your choice).
4. Walk it off.
If you are not ready for weight training or even running for long periods of time, get on a treadmill and walk at a fast pace for 30 to 45 minutes. Walking for extended periods of time elevates your heart rate and burns calories quite well. You have to start somewhere!
5. Take advantage of a school meal plan.
Chances are you are reading this because you are in college which means you are most likely on a meal plan. Universities always provide healthy options; including salad bars, fruits and any other food that is prepared. Educate yourself on nutrition and take advantage of having food prepared for you. It does not get any easier to eat well.
6. Sleep away!
Sleep is a limited resource in college. But if you have the chance to nap or get to bed earlier than normal, take it! Being well rested helps in every aspect of daily life.
7. Use all of your resources.
For many, the internet is their number one resource for information, and you could be using it to educate yourself on anything to do with exercise. There is no excuse nowadays to say "I don't know what to do in the gym." Watch some YouTube videos, then go work your butt off in the gym. A great place to start for everything regarding fitness is BodyBuilding.com. This website has forums, videos, exercise programs and custom workout plan generators. (Did I mention it's free?)
8. Join in on group fitness classes.
Every college has group fitness classes such as yoga, pilates and HIIT sessions. Sign yourself up!
9. Find a training partner.
Having a friend who knows his/her way around the gym is a fantastic way to get started on your journey to a healthier lifestyle. Working out with somebody in better shape than yourself will motivate you to try harder and push yourself.
10. Make working out a priority.
If you do not put working out at a higher priority than other things in your life, you will always find an excuse to skip out on the gym.
11. Ease into it.
Going from never working out to seven days a week is not feasible for anybody. When you start getting in shape, hit the gym two or three times a week to introduce your body to the new stress of working out.
12. Keep good hygiene.
Showering post-workout is essential to keep your body sweat-free and ward off any unwanted smells and acne.
13. Drink a TON of water.
The vast majority of people do not drink nearly enough water. Ever see the guys carrying around a gallon of water with them? Try it for yourself to see if you are drinking the recommended gallon of water a day.
14. Fuel your body post workout.
Taking a post workout protein supplement will help you build and sustain the muscle you worked so hard for.
15. Cheat!
Take a couple meals off from the strict diet a week. A hamburger or beer once a week will actually help you in the long run by improving your mental health and keeping you happy.
