7 Reasons Why You Should NOT Skip That Class, Even Though Extra Sleep Sounds Real Nice

Class is like a clingy significant other. Annoying to be with, and even more annoying to be without.

7 Reasons Why You Should NOT Skip That Class, Even Though Extra Sleep Sounds Real Nice
John Schnobrich

It's that time of the semester when those free, unexcused absences are starting to look a lot like God telling you that you need that extra sleep/study time. As someone that historically maxes out their absences within the first month of classes as the incentive to force myself to go for the rest of the semester, I am here to tell you.

It is never worth the headache and usually results in a necessity to do more damage control than necessary. So here is a list of seven reasons why you should go to class.

1. But that dignity, though.

You don't have to go to your professor during office hours to beg for extra credit or late assignment acceptance if the assignments aren't late and you know what's happening in class and can do well enough to get a grade that reflects that.

2. You don't have to learn what you already know.

When you do return to class after being absent, you will feel like Andy Sandberg getting kicked in the chest by Taylor Swift. Except you're not Andy Sandberg and Taylor Swift is actually gastrulation.

3. It's time efficient.

The amount of time and work it takes to actually catch up after you've missed class literally steals time--arguably more--than that 1-2 hour class would.

4. Give yourself incentives.

Pick a person in your class to use as extra incentive. Maybe they have great hair. Or a great sense of style. Use your interest to convince you that you have to go to class to see them. That outfit isn't going to give itself a compliment. (Actually talking to them is optional, but may help).

5. Your wallet wants you to go.

Every class you miss costs you money. A lot of it.

6. Naps are better than sleep.

If you reward yourself with a nap after class, it will make going seem less bad. You'll also get to experience the bliss of sleeping in the Computing Center at Cox.You have to get up in order to lay back down again.

7. It's why you're here.

Just do it. Commit to learning. Show up. Go gaga for learning. Dive into that material and show it who's boss.

I know getting out of bed can be hard sometimes, but think about all that staying costs you: time, energy, money, dignity, stress...it's not worth it, bro. In most cases, showing up unprepared is even better than not showing up at all. I find that having friends who have similar class times as you or that are in your same class can be helpful, as you can study together and hold each other accountable for showing up. I have alarms set for 30 minutes before each of my classes and receive text and call reminders to get up and go. Figure out what works for you and stick to it. Your GPA will thank you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
