Before Christmas, Kimberly Francis bought a charcoals face mask sold by the skincare company Yes To at her local Target. She thought it would be a great stocking stuffer for her 11-year old stepdaughter. But after her daughter used the mask on Monday night, things turned for the worst.
Francis's daughter ran upstairs to her parents and told them the mask "felt like it was burning" her face. Kimberly Francis told Buzzfeed News that "We had her take it off and her face was already clearly burned." Francis, thinking on her feet, quickly applied lidocaine to sooth the pain but the damage was done. The child's face was deep red and said that she almost left it on despite the pain because the package reads, "if it's tingling it's working."
Once the picture went viral, many consumers wrote about their own experiences with Yes To. The company responded by pulling the Unicorn Paper Mask from store shelves. Posting to their Facebook page, Yes To acknowledged that some of their customers had experienced adverse reactions. Customers that did experience skin irritation were told to contact the company's Customer Care team by emailing customer care.

Another mother, Donna Baines posted that her 15-year-old daughter had a very bad reaction when she used a Yes To mask. She wrote saying "She put it on for 15 minutes, and when she took it off, her face looked like it was sunburned and was very itchy." Although the skincare company preaches about using natural ingredients, it may be possible that these masks were contaminated.
But it isn't just children who are having these horrible reactions. Brittany Armstrong posted to Facebook saying that her face had become bright red after using the Yes To Unicorn Paper Mask. She said she felt a burning sensation and immediately knew that something was wrong.
Before trying any new skincare product, take precaution and read what ingredients are used. Dermatologists say that one of the first signs of a possible reaction occurring is the feeling of itching, stinging, or burning. It's also recommended that applying a cooling compress or taking an antihistamine will help with soothing the redness and swelling.
Hopefully, we'll see how Yes To handles this situation besides recalling their product and if they make changes to their skincare masks after the outcry.
