If you are a fan of electronic dance music, future bass, or experimental music I am sure you have heard of the artist Flume. More personally known as Harley Streten, Flume is a twenty-five year old Australian musician, record producer, and DJ. Since his debut as a house music producer in 2010, Harley has created two albums, the second winning Best Dance/Electronic Album at the 2017 Grammy Awards. This second album, Skin, came out on May 27th of 2016, topping the ARIA Albums Chart. Since the release of Skin, Flume has gifted us with two EP’s of the album, Skin Companion EP 1 (November 2016) and Skin Companion EP 2 (February 2017). With all of the attention and positive feedback this album has circulating, artists from around the globe have been itching to remix and change these songs into their own versions. Some good and some bad, I have heard many many mixes of hit songs from the Skin album, but not many have stuck with me…until now. On April 7, in celebration of the success of Skin, Harley released a playlist (accessible via Spotify, Soundcloud, iTunes, YouTube, GooglePlay, and Amazon) of a compilation of remixes.
Out of the sixteen songs on Skin, five were chosen for this first playlist of remixes. Through thirteen songs, the five works by Flume, “Numb & Getting Colder”, “Tiny Cities”, “Lose It”, “Never Be Like You”, and “Say It” were mixed into different genres, beats, and sounds. Flume hand-picked these thirteen remixes out of the hundreds and thousands as his favorites for these five original songs. Personally, I have two favorites out of these thirteen, the Baauer remix of “Numb & Getting Colder” and the Anna Lunoe remix of “Say It”. However, every remix is unique and they all cater to very different genres and beat styles.
If you were an original fan of the Skin album, check out this playlist of remixes, you will definitely find a new song to blast in your car after work and school. And if you have not heard the album or even any of Flume’s work before, check out a few of his original songs as well. He is an amazingly talented artist, there is bound to be at least one song that connects with you.
