I am a history graduate from Binghamton University and it has given me the skills needed to succeed in the real world. By taking history courses for my major especially the senior seminar that requires the most work due to the 20 page paper, I have learned to read effectively along with comprehending, analyze, and critical thinking.
History courses in college require a ton of reading. I enjoy reading and this has helped me read effectively and slowly. I began to improve on my reading comprehension skills and what vocabulary meant since I read the dictionary a lot as a hobby. It helped me understand stories and paragraphs more.
I have learned to analyze readings through primary and secondary sources. Besides books, it has helped me analyze songs, movies, and TV shows including episodes. I've learned to see whether or not I like that song, movie, TV show, or book.
Critical thinking was a big part of being a history major, college history courses give exams with identification questions asking who, what, where, when, and why it is a significant person, place, thing, or event. It was the toughest part of being a history major from my experience but it made me think of questions critically.
These things I learned was beneficial for me in the real world and when I get a job. These types of skills are what employers like to see on a resume that will open doors to employment.
