1. You don’t just learn how to broadcast.
Reading a script is not the only requirement. Being a broadcast journalism major, you have to learn aspects of multimedia. This includes editing video and audio, reporting, writing for print TV and radio and conduct interviews.
2. Be ready for anything.
News happens all the time. You have to be prepared to report wherever and whenever. There will be times that someone will call you and ask you to cover an event. You have to be ready.
3. Always tell the truth.
This one seems pretty obvious and easy to do. However, if journalists make one mistake they could be deemed as not credible. Credibility is extremely important in this major/industry because that determines if people can trust you or not.
4. Have knowledge on your subject.
You may be put on the spot especially in radio and TV to give more information on what you are talking about. Make sure you know your topic inside and out in case someone asks you to present more information.
5. Have confidence in yourself.
This is extremely important. In this major/ field, you have to have thick skin and not let negative comments affect you. Have confidence the way you broadcast and your story. You will make mistake, but remember you are human and that’s normal.
6. Practicing does make perfect.
Everyone makes mistakes when broadcasting; however, all you can do is recover and continue like nothing happened. In the words of Taylor Swift, “Shake It Off”. Learn from this and practice from time to time in order to perfect your broadcasting skills. The more you do it the better you'll be.
