Ahh, springtime. That time of year where the weather starts to get warmer, the birds start chirping, and trees across campus are in full bloom. Anyone could agree that there really isn't a *bad* time to be a Hokie, but there's something about the spring season in Blacksburg that just feels...right. Not to mention all the activities going on across campus this time of the year- what's not to love? Here are six reasons why spring is the best season to be a Hokie:
1.) Blooming trees and flowers everywhere
Just when it didn't seem possible, our already gorgeous campus becomes even more beautiful. Who could complain about a long walk across campus when they have dozens of beautiful, blooming trees to look at?
2.) Numerous outside activities
Whether it's barbecues and volleyball in the quad, or soccer and hammocks on the drillfield, everyone in the Virginia Tech community takes advantage of the spring weather. No matter where you go on campus, if it's a beautiful day, you're bound to see quite a few people getting outside.
3.) The Big Event
Whether you participate or not, you're probably familiar with the Big Event. The highly anticipated day of community service takes place every April, rain or shine (or snow, during the 2016 Big Event). Giving back to the community feels even better when you participate with a large group of Hokies with the same goal.
4.) 3.2 for 32 Run in Remembrance
Every year, Hokies past and present (and even future), run or walk in honor of the 32 members of the Virginia Tech community who were taken too soon in the April 16, 2007 campus shootings. This is a wonderful event because it brings members of the Virginia Tech community together to remember a tragic event in Hokie nation.
5.) Relay for Life
I mean, the fact that we have the biggest collegiate Relay for Life in the world is a pretty big deal by itself. Although the weather hasn't really cooperated the last few years, the turnout is always huge and the event is successful year after year.
6.) Spring Game
Let's face it, as the weather warms up, most of us have one thing on our minds: Hokie football. Although watching just our team split up and play against each other isn't quite as exciting, walking back into Lane just makes us even more excited for fall football season.
So, whether you plan to participate in one of these awesome events across campus this semester or not, springtime in Blacksburg is a great time to get outdoors and just celebrate being a Hokie. Four years at this wonderful place doesn't seem like enough, so we might as well enjoy it while we can.
