The weather is cooling down and soon it will be the perfect weather for flannels, hot chocolate, and big, fluffy blankets. It's also the perfect time to sit down with your friends, family, or significant other and watch a movie. The best kind of fall days are on a Sunday when the weather is cool and the leaves are crunchy. The only perfect addition is to pop in a movie and relax the day away. Here are six movies that you should watch at least once this fall:
1. "Dead Poet's Society" (1989)
“We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. So medicine, law, business, engineering... these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love... these are what we stay alive for.
It's a possibility that you might have seen this in a high school English class, but in the unfortunate case that you haven't seen it yet, go watch it now. Robin Williams is an English professor who sees more in his students than any other professor ever would. He teaches his students the art of literature and how important it is to seize the day. One of my favorite quotes from the movie is, "“We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. So medicine, law, business, engineering... these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love... these are what we stay alive for.”
2. "Perks of Being a Wallflower" (2012)
“So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I'm still trying to figure out how that could be.”
First of all, Emma Watson is a good enough reason to watch this movie. But for many other reasons, this is a feel-good movie. It addresses issues that many high-schoolers and young twenty-somethings go through on a day to day basis. It touches your heart in the aspects of friendship, first loves, and heartbreaks.
3. "Sinister" (2012)
"Don't worry, daddy. I'll make you famous again."
Fall calls for a scary movie, right? I'm not the type of gory movies, so when I find a scary movie that isn't focused on killing in cold blood, I'm interested. I saw Sinister in theaters and I can say that I am positive I couldn't sleep right for days. This is the kind of movie that truly messes with you for a while after the movie is over.
4. "God's Not Dead" (2014)
Mark: You prayed and believed your whole life. Never done anything wrong. And here you are. You're the nicest person I know. I am the meanest. You have dementia. My life is perfect. Explain that to me!
Mina's Mother: Sometimes the devil allows people to live a life free of trouble because he doesn't want them turning to God. Their sin is like a jail cell, except it is all nice and comfy and there doesn't seem to be any reason to leave. The door's wide open. Till one day, time runs out, and the cell door slams shut, and suddenly it's too late.
For those who aren't too religious or aren't religious at all, don't shy away from this movie. I was skeptical of this movie because I wasn't too interested in watching a sermon for two hours, but "God's Not Dead" was far from that. The characters and the lessons shown in the movie are very moving. It was a bit of a tear-jerker, but I assure you, there are plenty of moments that made me smile.
5. "The Great Gatsby" (2013)
"They were careless people, Tom and Daisy—they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”
The soundtrack, the outfits, the story line are all great aspects behind this movie. The movie does the book justice, something that doesn't always hold true. The characters are so intriguing in the lifestyle they live and their motivations behind their actions. Leonardo DiCaprio is an amazing asset, as he usually is in his movies. The Gatsby/Daisy relationship begs viewers to understand that just because you think a person is a certain way, doesn't necessarily mean that they are.
6. "We're The Millers" (2013)
Kenny Rossmore: So now you're going to become an even bigger drug dealer?
David Clark: Drug smuggler, Kenny. There's a difference.
Of course, every movie list needs one comedy! "We're The Millers" is a gut-aching comedy. The chemistry between the cast is believable and it really makes the movie. The movie's plot isn't exactly the most realistic, but it has a lot of real life elements that make the movie fun to watch. The individual characters are unique and it sets the movie apart from a typical 21st century comedy.
