Friday, August 26th 2016, during a preseason game, 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick made a decision to not stand while the national anthem was being sung because he felt that should not "stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color”, which is what he told NFL Media in an interview that was published the very next day.
Since then, there has been such a divide in our country about whether of not Kaepernick made the right decision at the right time.
There have been several media outlets that say that Kaepernick is brave and bold for what he has done, while others think that the Quarterback made an "ignorant" and "stupid" move on his behalf.
Kaepernick choosing to sit out during the anthem, while the rest of his teammates were standing with their hands over their hearts, certainly makes him stand out.
But not in a way he should have been.
His reasons behind it made sense and were in support of Black lives and people of color in this country, but his actions were made out to be as if he was unpatriotic and ungrateful towards those who served this country and protect it every single day.
Yet those who do protect our country sometimes wears a blue uniform and kill Black men and women constantly along with other people of color.
That is what the Quarterback was trying to show the world when he chose to sit out during the national anthem, by showing that people were being oppressed in America. He thought that by showing he is choosing to sit out on the anthem until something is done about it, people wouldfinally listen and have this discussion on what to do about the long standing oppression in the world, which is happening. But now, people will talk about how Kaepernick tried to prove a point by sitting down while the national anthem was sung in front of not only everyone in the stadium, but the entire country was watching. They can all see that Colin Kaepernick was sitting down, waiting for the anthem to finish and trying to show his support for the Black lives matter movement and the fight to end the oppression of Black people in the way he thought was best: by sitting down on the bench, as if he was warming it up for his team. Now, there is discussion around the country, but it's now about a Quarterback and his decisions from here on out and questioning what he will do next.
