If you looked at my TV watching habits, you would notice two main characteristics. 1. I watch a plethora of children's shows. 2. I watch an equal amount of old sit-coms. Why? You ask. Well, here, you can get a description of why I love watching shows that are primarily made for kiddies. Whereas the rest of this article will explain to you my love and appreciation of old sit-coms. (and maybe it will sway you to my way of life)
1. I love the clean, slap-stick humor.
The "Dick Van Dyke Show" is my favorite example of this pure humor. My favorite way to wind down is to sit on the couch with my mama and a tub of ice cream and turn this on Netflix. Dick Van Dyke is just all around adorable, from his over-exaggerated emotions to his comical slapstick, I find him absolutely delightful.
2. Sometimes you need a little candid advice.
Old sitcoms told it like it was without fail. I can learn quality values and ways of life, all while watching my favorite shows for hours on end.
3. The characters are undeniably relatable.
These shows emanate real life. There are high points; there are low points; the people interact in fallible ways. In a society where everything and everyone must be perfect, it is wonderful to be able to turn to these old sitcoms and see that life is not always beautiful or perfect. Things are gray and people make mistakes.
4. They mock certain things about society.
The thing about old sitcoms is that they were not afraid to tackle difficult or stupid things that resounded in society. Indeed, the fact that they are comedies makes it so they are so inclined to scrutinize society in such ways. Maybe today's comedies are lost on me, but I do not see that as happening so much in modern sitcoms.
5. There is so much sarcasm.
I mean, who does not love a daily dose of sarcasm? It makes things infinitely better! Besides the fact that being embedded in an existence of high sarcasm for a half hour or so increases my level of sarcasm. It's great!
6. The main character often has a sense of righteous morality.
The heroines and heroes of these sitcoms are often cut and dry when it comes to instances of morality... until they face a layered issue. This is attuned to life. We go about our days thinking in "right" and "wrong," barely taking time for the in between. But these characters lay out a way to behave in those in between moments, and that is important.
7. They embody normal relationships.
All weird quirks included, old sitcoms leave elbow room (haha) for those inside jokes in friendships and all those idiosyncrasies that happen in normally functioning relationships. There are no fairy tale endings. Fights happen, people leave, (contract disputes), and frustrations boil.
All in all, what isn't there to love about these classic sitcoms?
