I Sit With Kaepernick

Ya'll wanted peaceful protest, right? Here you go."

I Sit With Kaepernick
Alan Archibald

Colin Kaepernick is a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ners. He's recently gained a hell of a lot of attention for refusing to stand during the national anthem in protest to the police brutality and the oppression of people of color. "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick said to NFL.com in an interview. Of course a lot of people are not OK with it. Saying that he's rich and shouldn't feel oppressed. But even if he wasn't, that doesn't make anything he's protesting for any less important or true. He is one of other athletes protesting and speaking out against police brutality. Several WNBA players have been fined for wearing shirts in solidarity with Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, recent victims of unjust police violence. Along with three women volleyball players that kneeled for the national anthem

Why I Agree.

Why should I stand for a song that represents a country that has disrespected my people( and other people of color) since it was established? It proves his point, when people are more upset about him exercising his right to sit during the anthem than at the number of black and brown bodies slain at the hands of the American police. I don't have to go into all the sh*tty things American has done and is STILL DOING, because if you live here, then you should know. So, excuse me if I sit when it's time to salute the country that has proved time and time again that it doesn't care about POC.

Whenever I bring up things that are wrong with America and need to be changed, I get hit with "Other people in other countries have it worse" excuse. I admit that we are lucky to have the liberties that we were awarded when we were birthed as an American citizen, BUT don't you think we have a right to be upset if innocent black and brown people are being gunned down in the name of 'Law and Order' (racism) by killers (cops) that get in no trouble and are basically being told that their actions are okay?? Something must be changed if we can't even walk down the street without being criminalized and(more often than not) killed. So, until those things are changed, protests (peaceful or not) like this will happen and you all can continue to be outraged or you can change. The choice is yours.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
