Why Sisters Make the Best Best Friends

Because no one gets you like they do!

There is something special about the relationship between sisters. Sure, you know how to push all their buttons and can annoy them on command, but you also have a built in best friend that has to love you and knows you better than anyone in the world. Here are some reasons why your sister is the best friend you could ever hope for!

She understands you

Sisters understand you on a level that no one else ever will. Not only does she know your Starbucks order, which jewel tones are your favorite, and the name of your future pug (Pickles the pug if you were wondering), she's also the only one that can unravel gibberish like, "Who is the guy with the face that always says the things in the voice?" or "My hair was doing the weird triangle thing" or "I just feel so floopsy today!"

You're Weird matches her Weird

You've spent so much time together that you have cultivated a unique brand of mutual weirdness, and being weird together makes it ten times more fun! Go get disproportionately excited about dinosaur chicken nuggets, take adorable sister Instagram pictures all over town, find cat memes on the Internet. Whatever your sister fun looks like, it's great knowing she's always there to have fun with/be weird with/bother until she plays with you.

The competition

Sisters can get overly competitive about pretty much anything: who gets the best grades, who has the best taste, who can sing and dance best to Beyonce's "Single Ladies." A N Y T H I N G . But you know what, you love her for it because she makes you push yourself and the competition makes life more interesting.

Great Compliments

"I love your nose bump," "you're simply majestic," "you are a ray of sunshine in a world of rainclouds," "your nose is so boopable," and "you have mermaid hair" are just a few of the personalized compliments my sister and I have thrown around in the last 48 hours. Sister compliments are the best because they know all your insecurities and all the things that you love most about yourself. Put that together and you get the most empowering, uplifting, and strangely wonderful compliments ever!

Honesty

If you want an honest answer to "What do you think of my new bangs?" or "Do you think these gauchos will come back in style?" then you can always talk to your sister. They've known you so long and are so comfortable with you that they are in no way afraid to hurt your feelings. This can either be really good or really bad! But at the end of the day, they're blunt with you about what matters when others won't be, and that's what matters.

She has pictures of you from middle school, so you need to keep her on your good side.

It's true. This chick has some quality blackmail. I'm talking braces, middle school dances, and your Jonas Brothers phase (though let's be real, you're not too ashamed of that). Keep your friends close and your sister closer.

You protect each other

You may be brutally honest with each other, but if anyone else crosses your sister, they better watch themselves. You always have each others backs when it comes to mom and dad. And not only does she protect you from others, she protects you from yourself. Thinking about dating the no-good boy who says things like "'sup" or "women belong in the kitchen." Yeah, that's not happening on your sister's watch. It's great that there is someone there who things you deserve the best the wold has and who always watches out for you. And you wouldn't trade that for the world.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
