The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Tattoos

Sisters aren't always blood.

Sister (n): A person who's been where you've been; someone you can call when things aren't going right; is more than just family; a sister is a forever friend.

Four years ago I could not sit here and tell you that I would have 3 best friends that would perfectly fit this description. A sister. I have a sister that is blood, and I love her more than anything, but these girls have been through the thick and thin of high school with me. From the stupid boys we've dealt with, to going to Sonic after football games every Friday night in the fall, to laughing so hard we're crying at the crack of dawn because of how delusional we are. These girls are not just ordinary best friends that will step out of my life just because we have gone our separate ways because of college. They have been a part of my life daily for the past four years, so we decided to not just stay involved in each other's lives but to actually be a part of each other in a way that will never be taken away. The dreaded word most parents pray that their child will never tell them that they want or are getting: a tattoo.

Now lately since tattoos are gaining more popularity, it has been very controversial. Especially in the church. I understand others have different views and opinions about getting one and that is okay, and I respect you and your opinions and feelings towards the situation. So please respect me and my feelings toward getting one. It has meaning, and it is sentimental to me and will always mean something. Many will say how friends change and how years down the road we won't even talk and we will only reminisce at high school reunions. My question following this statement is, 'Do you know what the future holds?' Because as long as we are alive, we have made an oath with these tattoos that we are always going to put forth the effort. We are sisters, and sisters look out for each other forever.

Seen below is a picture of me with the tattoo we all got. So why did we get birds? Birds fly together in packs, and we are a pack of girls. We had the birds placed to where they were flying towards our backs, because birds always know how to fly home to each other, and we are home to one another. I am the lead bird because they see me as a leader of the group. Yasmine is next because she likes to stay centered and stay on track with everything in lfe. Peden is the third one because even though she has been through rough times and has rough edges, she is getting back on track and staying with the group. Taylor is last because she has all of our backs. (They all are pictured on the cover picture in order.)

We don't buy into these... just like how we don't buy our friends.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
