Soulmates are not easy to come by. Except if you grew up with yours. No matter what has happened, the one thing that has always remained constant was my amazing sister, there for everything, humbly beautiful, and basically perfect. If you're lucky enough to have a sister you're close with, there are nine things that probably happen to show that she is your soulmate.
1. She lets you vent to her.
Whether I’m being petty or genuinely fighting with someone, she is always there to back me up. If I need to talk about something, she is there to listen for however long my complaining lasts, even if that’s just about someone cutting me off on the highway. Even better, if someone wrongs me, they wrong her too. Being in college away from her has only strengthened this, as I can count on weekly vent sessions on both sides, which has only made our relationship stronger.
2. She laughs at your terrible jokes.
Being someone who tells the same joke thousands of times, she always gives me a sympathy chuckle at least, which ends up starting us off into a fit of giggles. And then it ends with her giving me a compliment about how weird I am.
3. When your family’s fighting, she’s almost always on your side.
Everyone knows that when you have siblings, fights always occur. I know that my sister will always take my side in matters and defend me unconditionally except…
4. If you’re completely in the wrong, she’ll tell you.
There are times when I’m on my high horse and won’t listen to anyone else’s viewpoints. She’s the one who tells me to stop being stubborn, and the only one I’ll listen to.
5. She’s always there for you.
Through thick and thin, she’s been there all along to wipe your tears, laugh with you, or support you in your time of need. Living under the same roof or being hundreds of miles away, nothing can ever separate us. I’ve come to her with my biggest problems and even when I’m being ridiculous, she’s never left my side, although sometimes my anger was misdirected at her.
6. You keep each other’s secrets.
What your parents don’t know won’t hurt them takes on a whole new meaning. That may be hiding something, helping her get out of a messy situation, or even pretending to be her when she used to stay out, not once did Mom find out. Even when being confronted, we stayed strong and only later talked about how mischievous we are. We’re basically like Dr. Evil and Mini me, but 10 times cooler.
7. Fighting with her is absolutely terrible.
I can pretty much tolerate anyone being mad at me except my sister. It’s the most painful silence and all I want to do is make up, even though neither of us budges for a while… but thankfully we always end up budging and make up.
8. If someone hurts her, they’re dealing with you first.
You have to go through me first. My protective instincts are through the roof when it comes to her, and I’m not afraid to show it if someone’s treating her wrong.
9. She’s your best friend.
My sister is my: confidant, soulmate, rock, hero, idol, role model, partner in crime, best friend, and I thank her.
Thank you for laughs, tears, standing up for me, telling it like it is, showing me what a true friend is, helping me see that no guy will ever replace you, never letting me settle, bringing out my competitive side, and making me the best me that exists. I couldn’t do the whole life thing without you, sis, and I wouldn’t want to. You loved me through my awkward phases and for that I love you forever and always, to the moon and back, and more than anyone on this Earth.
