To My 'Little Sister'

In case I haven't told you enough just how much I appreciate you.

To My 'Little Sister'
Emily Jane Traub

Growing up, I always wanted a sister. I don't know if that's something that all little girls long for, or just me. Don't get me wrong, I have a brother, and I love him dearly. I can't imagine my life without him. He was my first partner in crime, my go to play mate and companion, and is one of my best friends. I wouldn't want any other sibling. Still, I loved the idea of a sister.

Like an answer to a prayer, God gave me you.

We became friends because our families were friends, and what else were we going to do but hang out while our brothers ran wild and our parents talked? I may be three years your senior, but none of that mattered as our bond deepened over the years. Age is just a number, and not an important one when you've been lucky enough to stumble across and kindred spirit in this great, wide world. I became your confidant, your sounding board, your conspirator. And you became mine. We grew up together, watching each other triumph and make mistakes, and both learning from them.

I am so proud of you and the young woman you have become. I may have been your role model growing up, but I hope you know that I aspire to be like you, too. You've taught me how to be brave, kind and how to never give up, just as much as I've taught you. You inspire me every day to love and to love deeply, even when it hurts. Because you never know what people are going through, and that might be all they need to change their world.

I truly don't know what I would do without you, your advice (good and bad) and your endless love and support. You always have my back, and I know you will always stand up for me, as I will for you. I can't imagine my life without you, and I don't want to.

We may not be sisters by blood, but we are sisters at heart. We act like sisters, think like sisters, talk like sisters and even look like sisters. In fact, sometimes I even introduce you as my sister because I forget that by technical standards, we aren't related. The funny thing is, most people don't even question it.

Wherever this world takes you, just know that you'll have a "big sister" who will stand with you, no matter what. Live your dreams, Sissy, because the world is your canvas. Anyone who doubts you doesn't know what's coming, but I do. Spread your wings, little bird, and fly. This is only the beginning.

With much love,

Sissy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
