My Sister is Turning 21, And It feels Like there is no time left

My dear older sister, this is for you.

You are now turning 21, and I feel like time is flying by. I can still remember when we were young wearing matching outfits at our joint birthday party. Our birthdays are only a week apart, but now that we are older, the week feels like a lifetime. You are growing up to be what I always knew what you were going to be — a beautiful person ready to take on the world. You are working hard towards your degree and working hard at your job to get out of this state.

You are my role model.

I always look up to you for advice no matter the situation. You always handle problems with such grace that it makes me want to be you. You are going out and living your life no matter what. I know that it was a rough childhood, but you were able to pull through and come out on top. There is no time left because we are growing up too fast. We are both finishing up with college, and we are trying to put our plans for the future in motion. We will soon go our separate ways as our lives are taking different paths. I miss us staying up late at night showing each other funny videos and trying to smother our laughter before we wake up the whole house.

Please don't forget to give the world a chance.

The world is not out to get you. Please stop and take a chance on the world. There are so many doors waiting for you to kick them down. You had a lot of obstacles in life, but for you to be here now shows just how strong you are. You are one of the strongest people I know. You bypass all the doubts thrown your way, and you continue to shine even in the darkest moments. Don't let all those bad moments get the best of you. You are full of hope and happiness. I know that we will never be fully apart since you have a place in my heart.

Never forget that I am here for you.

I will always be real to you. I will never lie to you. I know you hesitate to ask me for advice, but I promise you that I will do my best to solve your problem. You will probably know how much I love you, but I do my best by telling you once a day. We have our fights, but we can never remain mad at each other for long. There is still so much left to do together, and we still have a lifetime to go. I feel like there is no time because this time, it is us against the world. I was always one grade below you so we had elementary, middle, and high school together. It is me following you through life ready to catch you if you fall. You don't have to be perfect for me. I already know that you are the best older sister that anyone can ask for. Don't worry about me so much now, you have the world on your fingertips.

"A sister is a blessing who fills your heart with love. She flies with you in life with the beauty of a dove." -Shiv Sharma

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
