Dear Little Sis,

You are turning 18 and I just want to take a few moments to celebrate who you are. Over the past 18 years of your life, you have grown into a truly amazing woman.

Your love is fierce and abundant. I could never understand how you made friends so easily and that's something I've always admired about you. You have this innate ability to make friends in whatever you do. It's miraculous. You're also insanely talented. In your 18 years, you've dabbled in so many things, each one showcasing a different aspect of yourself. From softball to swimming to color guard to singing to acting, you shine so bright.

I can't imagine life without you and I'm so happy that I've gotten to see you grow into the remarkable human you are today. You were the one who played house with me when we were kids. You are the one who gives tight never-ending hugs. You are the one who cranks the music so we can rock out at the top of our lungs in the car. You are my go to sidekick. Every minute of the 18 years I've known you have been incredible. I can only hope that your future years will be as full as the past.

Turning 18 is one of many milestones in your life, because you have finally been granted the title of "adult." You start a new chapter in your life bringing both highs and lows. 18 is exciting and wonderful and magical. On the other hand, being an adult is tough stuff and no one gives you a handbook. Just because you're an adult doesn't mean you are gifted with the knowledge of how everything will work out. So try different and new things, make mistakes, turn your life upside down. Whatever you do, make sure you stay true to who you are, because who you are is pretty special.

If you get stuck, I will be there. I want you to know that I'll be there for you every step of the way, just like you have been for me. I will be there with iced coffee and croissants to listen to all of your greatest adult moments, and I will be there with tissues and open arms to comfort all of the rough patches. This birthday marks the start of your adulthood, and I can't wait to see how special it will be.

Each year of your life has been a blessing to everyone you've met, and this year will be no different. You have and always will be the avocado to my toast, the frosting to my donut and the espresso to my latte. You are an essential part of my life. I hope your birthday is as miraculous as you are.

Love,

Big Sis

P.S. I hope this makes up for the fact that I haven't gotten you a birthday gift yet. Love you!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
