If you’re rather odd like me, then being single on Valentine’s Day doesn’t bother you very much. If you’re even weirder, then as the big day gets closer and closer, you start catching the Valentine fever and start daydreaming about true love.
I don’t know why now all of a sudden my mind is like, “wouldn’t falling in love be great right now? I think it would, buddy.” But it is. So, rather than get annoyed that I am bubbling with love and affection to the brim (ew) and have absolutely no one to give it, I turned to the only thing I can in times like this: music!
Here’s a playlist of songs to help you cope with your cold Valentine sweat, or just get your mind dreaming about one day finding “the One.”
1. Fifth Harmony - “Scared Of Happy”
“Used to be fearless / why am I scared of happy?”
This upbeat and dancy track from 5H’s (now 4H) 7/27 deals with finding someone worth spending your time with and giving your attention to, but the pain of your past flings troubles you with feelings of uncertainty and fear. When you’re standing on the edge of anticipation, the best thing to do is just jump, girl!
2. Carly Rae Jepsen - “Higher”
“You take me higher than the rest / oh, everybody else is second best!”
The highlight from Carly Rae Jepsen’s small but sweet collection of EMOTION outtakes pumps your body with that sickening 80’s beat and bubbling lyrics about finding someone that breaks down the walls of cynicism and makes you feel truly happy.
3. Panic! At The Disco - “Sarah Smiles”
“Does she know that my destiny lies with her?”
Lead singer of Panic! At The Disco Brendon Urie wrote this song for his wife, girlfriend at the time, Sarah Urie. Maybe sometimes, giving in and falling into the trap of someone that entices your attention out of you unwillingly isn’t such a bad thing. Urie would later follow up to “Sarah Smiles” with “The End Of All Things,” a song he wrote for her as his wedding vows, on Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die!
4. Ellie Goulding - “Love Me Like You Do”
“My head's spinning around, I can’t see clear no more… What are you waiting for?”
The theme song from everyone’s favorite erotic film franchise is undoubtedly one of the best love songs written in recent years. Whether Goulding’s vocals and the lyrics make you feel sexy, elated, happy, or in love, there’s no doubt that the crashing chorus will make you feel something!
5. Little Mix - “Your Love”
“Deeper than oceans and sweetest devotion, it’s all I need / You pull me close and there’s no way that I can describe… what your love make me feel like.”
“Your Love” proves yet again that Little Mix shines best when they show their vulnerable side. Though this track starts off soft and slow, it won’t be long before you’re imagining yourself with the love of your life dancing on a beach in the pale moonlight, even if you can’t pinpoint who that person might be just yet.
6. Lady Gaga - “Bad Romance”
“I want your love, and I want your revenge / I want your love; I don’t wanna be friends!”
Lady Gaga shook the world when she released “Bad Romance” - it was unlike anything she had ever done before! Little did her Little Monsters know that this song, along with the rest of The Fame Monster, would shape her sound for the rest of her career up until her latest, Joanne. Gaga wrote “Romance” out of her fear of falling in love (each of the songs on Monster are associated with a specific fear), and, lyrically, the song is about falling in love with a good friend. So, if you have a confusing thing going on with one of your best friends, then maybe, like, don’t listen to this one.
7. Ariana Grande - “Sometimes”
“Is it love, is it lust, is it fear? / But it’s hard to breathe when you’re touching me there, hard to breathe when you’re kissing me there, hard to breathe… when you’re not here.”
“Sometimes” is about being so in love with someone that nothing could ever possibly tempt you from leaving them. Things are not always easy, but that doesn’t stop you from getting your happy ending with your love. “Sometimes” deals with that kind of love we’ve all hoped we’d get one day after watching all those stories about love and forever afters when we were kids.
8. The Neighbourhood - “Single”
“I never meant to hurt ya, baby girl.”
Sometimes we have it good, and then we mess it up. Hurting someone we truly love, and not realizing how much we love them until later, can lead to heavy regret. “Single” finds a boy trying to right his wrongs and apologize to his girl, and her father, for breaking her heart. From the way the song ends, it sounds like it ends up being alright in the end.
9. Tinashe - “Superlove”
“I want you, I want you, I want you to be my baby!”
Fast-paced and sharp delivery by Tinashe make this song about falling in love (maybe a little bit too quickly, but that’s okay) one of her best releases ever. Her hybrid style of rapping and singing in the verses brings us back to Nicki Minaj’s “SuperBass” from quite a few years back. Let this song get you hyped as you think about being “the One” for someone else for a change.
10. EDEN - “Sex”
“And we’re just having sex, no I would never call it love… but… love....”
A little bit comical but completely honest, “Sex” by EDEN finds one half of a friends-with-benefits pair catching feelings, and suddenly, it becomes much more than just sex. Embark on this rollercoaster of a journey, both musically and lyrically, as he works up the courage to tell his girl how he really feels.
Dance around your room, get loose, and have fun this Valentine’s Day. Just because you’re single this year doesn’t mean you can’t dream about maybe finding that special someone someday.
