A Single Girl's Guide To Valentine's Day

Tears aren't always the answer.

Well, here we are again. The happiest time of the year full of love and joy and romance. Oh wait - I'm single. Valentine's Day can be a little rough for us gals out there without a significant other, and sometimes the slightest tinge of bitterness can arise towards those in the relationship of their dreams. Typically, V-day results in a fair amount of spilt tears and glasses of wine. However, if you're tired of moping around waiting for your prince charming, here is my single girl's guide to doing Valentine's Day right.

Girls' Night In

Otherwise known as "Galentines Day," surrounding yourself with equally supportive, mopey, and single friends is definitely the way to go on this sorry excuse for a holiday. This night could go one of two ways depending on the mood of the crowd, so be prepared with tissues for either a waterfall of tears or an aggressive boy bashing evening. I like to look at V-day as a cleanse to my soul, so release all that negative energy on this hellish day so you can pull yourself together for the remaining single months of the year. Zayn Malik's new song and copious amounts of candy are optional but highly recommended.

Eat. A lot.

In my opinion, there's no better way to improve self-esteem and morale than gorging on a beautiful, large vodka penne pizza. That potential boyfriend doesn't know what he's missing, so you should probably try to work on the impressive amount of food you can put away at any given time. In all seriousness, eating away your sorrows for one night is never really a bad idea. The gym will always be there tomorrow.

Dress Up and Go Out

The alternative to staying in and despising life on this glorious day is to go out and have a night to remember. Dress up in your cutest outfit, gather all your single friends, and hit the town (or in this case, the bars in the Bronx - marginally less classy, but you take what you can get). Who cares that V-day is on a Sunday night? Love, or lack thereof, has no boundaries. And who knows what kind of people you could meet out on this night of avoiding feelings.

Maybe Wine Isn't So Bad

Revoking my previous statement on changing up Valentine's Days wine drinking reputation, a glass or two might not be the worst thing in the world. So long as you aren't locked in your room wallowing alone with a box of Franzia, I see no problem in sharing a glass with friends and reminiscing on the days when it was you in a happy relationship (or at least happily single). It's funny that I feel so old and wise giving advice on the good old days, but with no relationship experience maybe I'm not the best one for the job.

Buy Flowers...for yourself

I love flowers. I don't care the occasion or who they're from, a nice bouquet of sunflowers is all I could ever ask for. So, this Valentine's day I really see no problem in boosting my own mood with my favorite flowers and a romantic card delivered from yours truly. You have to love yourself before others can love you (or something like that), so this is the perfect way to start. If you're feeling real frisky on this fine day, maybe even throw an edible arrangement into the mix. Nothing like some beautifully cut fruit to ease the wound of a relationship-less life.

Even without the love of your life this Valentine's Day, there is no reason to lose faith in the good of humanity or the future of your romantic interests. Surrounded by the right friends (or flowers), February 14 might not be the day that the world decides to end. At least this year.

The 5 Painfully True Stages Of Camping Out At The Library

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

1. Finals are weeks away, I’m sure I’ll be ready for them when they come.
