The past two years I never had to worry about “cuffing season”. I had a girlfriend, which meant that I wouldn’t need to worry about trying to find someone to brave bone-chilling blizzards, terribly awkward holiday dinners, or romantic Valentines Day nights with. Now that I no longer have that luxury, I find myself constantly thinking about grabbing a last minute holiday season girlfriend. Until today when I was in the shower (where 90% of my deepest thinking occurs) and I realized that being single over the holidays is an opportunity rather than a curse.
1. Family Focus
I will not be running around the state trying to make it to family events full of people who aren’t even family. I get to sit back in my pajamas and enjoy the holidays with the people I love.
2. Free Time
Now that I don’t have 1,000 different places to be, I can use my time in any way I want. Netflix, gym, work, and repeat.
3.Money
Maybe I am just selfish, but at least now I don’t have to spend money on gifts for people I barely even know. On top of that, I will save a ton of gas.
4. Regain Your Independence
In all seriousness, this one is important. You are liable to feel lonely at times this season but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Learning to be alone, especially over the holidays, will help you become a more independent individual. Whenever you feel alone this season, grab a cup of spiked eggnog and get lit with the people who love you!
5. Less Stress
Trying to orchestrate a plan to make it to everyone’s celebrations is like trying to do a group project the night before it is due. We like to think it is possible to perfect but in reality, it sucks. So wake up, grab some coffee and have a stress free holiday because you only have one family to worry about.
6. New Years Eve
New Years Eve as a couple is basically just a waiting game. You wait until midnight and you have a friend take a cliché New Years Eve kiss photo, then after you post it to Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, you dance a little bit and go home. Sure, its fun but I for one am more excited to ring in the New Year with the exciting spontaneity of being single.
Life is way too short to place your happiness on another persons presence. Being on your own is always an opportunity to grow and to experience life to its fullest. So let loose and have some fun this season.
