Who knew one word could have a million different meanings to one person. But then I realized what that word meant to me and how it related to me and can relate to anyone. I love the idea that no one in the world is the same. Sure, we might have the same name as others, but you as an individual is a totally different person. We create friendships with our common interest but we also fall in love with the differences we see in others. Personally, I never thought I could listen to country music, it was nothing in my music range, but then I met my boyfriend and that’s when it grew on me since he listens to it all the time. Slowly during each car ride I would watch his lips memorize the next word and then suddenly I fell for the same tune. The thing that got me started on my perspective tattoo was a simple 3-minute lesson I got from my favorite art teacher. I was having trouble with the shadows I was painting in a still life that was filled with cloth. Whenever she gave us a mini-lesson when we were struggling with something, she would simply paint a small area of the painting to show her point. That day when I was struggling, she said, “ I would paint some part of this to try and help you but the colors that I see may not be the same as the colors you see.” She went on about how when we look at things, they are shaped by the lights and darks and the shadows created from the surrounding objects and lights in that area. So for example, when you take a white cloth and place it over a box and tell someone to paint that, someone with not much painting experience would simply paint a cloth that is plain white and then maybe outline it in some black to show shapes. But for others, we look at it and depending on many factors of the environment we are in, we could see some yellows and reds in that simple white cloth. Or possibly fall for the cool colors of blue and green. All depending on what the individual sees that day. So that’s when my teacher used the word perspective and how you see something and really look at it, as you take apart and put back together the colors and shapes with just your two hands and the flow of your arm and how you get it down onto paper.
