11 Tips to Be a Gentleman
The Sweat Life

What does it mean to be a gentleman? Dressing snazzy? Every girl is crazy about a sharp dressed man. That may be true, but those words from the ZZ Top song "Sharp Dressed Man" has a limit. To be a gentleman, it is not enough to look the part because you have to be the part. Be a man of class and sophistication. It seems like the actions of a true gentleman has died in my generation and has become just an idea. Well my brothers, we can revive it. There are numerous tips and rules, but I think I got certain ones that can really help the quest. Here are my 11 tips to become a gentleman.

1. Hold the door for a ladies and men a.k.a. EVERYBODY.

This includes car doors for ladies. It really breaks my heart that I have to put this one up here. It should be common sense. It does not matter if they say "Thank you" or not, it is good manners. It is the most subtle, yet most powerful ways to show consideration to others. It shows you care.

2. Master the handshake.

Not too soft to where it is limp, but not too hard where their hand turns purple. A firm handshake (with eye contact) that shows that you mean business.

3. Know when to not say anything.

There are times where you need to be patient and hold your tongue. Know when to fight your battles and know when to stay silent. Silence is a strong weapon that few have mastered.

4. Call your mother.

One of the most simple tips. I am sure she misses you. Call in every now and then to check up and talk about what is going on in life.

5. Be punctual.

Be on time by arriving five to ten minutes early. Remember: If you're early, you're on time, but if you're on time, you're late.

6. Remember your table manners.

"Please" and "thank you" are important, but most importantly, and this should be common knowledge, do not, NOT, talk with your mouth full or chew with your mouth open.

7. Keep your word and keeps secrets secret.

Do not make plans or commitments if you are not willing to do everything in your power to fulfill those plans. Also, if you are entrusted with a secret, guard it with your life like it is your own. Live and die with them.

8. Treat every woman with respect.

Imagine this: you have a daughter or a younger sister who you look out for. Now imagine a guy like you were to go out with her. How would you feel? Would you let them go out? Be the bigger the person.

9. Connect with people.

Now this might be difficult to start, but trust me, it pays off in the long run. Say hello to a stranger. Make a new friend. Be approachable. Remember that it is about them, not you. Listen to them, ask questions, and make notes. Who knows? Maybe you will meet a billionaire who decides to hire you because he likes you.

10. Show that you care every day.

It is the little things that can make your woman feel like she is the only girl in the world. Flowers and post-it notes with compliments really go a long way. Just do something that can put a smile on her face.

11. Be yourself.

Being at peace with who you are is the sure sign of a true gentleman. It is ok to let your guard down, especially today when our personal and social lives are connected from social media. Just remember Dr. Seuss: "You are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than you."

"The greatest act of rebellion today is chivalry and being a Gentleman." ~ Being Caballero

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
