Simple Poem

That's it: a poem.

Sometimes all you need is a simple poem. Found poetry is written by being observant and writing about what you see. It is very simple and sometimes I think that is something we need. Especially now when it seems like no one can get along. So here is a simple poem that I hope will make you think about the simpler things in life.

It's not all sunshine and roses.

It's pain, heartbreak, and loss.

Ash can fill your lungs and settle in your mouth.

You're on the ground with roots

But you must rise and cut those roots.

Or risk becoming annihilated.

I wrote this poem because finals week was coming and in my personal life, I have had some unfortunate things happen. The first line comes from my favorite show I was watching, Chicago Fire. It is something I keep in mind and is especially applicable now. It is kind of a cliche "not sunshine and rainbows". I like the word "roses" because it conjures up an image of love and beauty. The second line is something that is said in response to the first. I have experienced some of those emotions in the past month. It explains the reality of life. The third line comes from the fact I was reading about the recent fires in the South and is applicable of how I feel when the stress of finals and life comes too much. You can feel like your life is burning around you because of life or a failing a class and it feels like ash in your mouth and lungs. It's not a good taste or feeling to have. The next line I got from a song I had been listening to, "Roots" by Imagine Dragon. I feel like some of us get stuck in our ways and it is not necessarily a good thing. The last line comes from a trailer for a movie I watched "Miss Sloane". There is a line I really liked "Do you know the word 'annihilate'? It means reduced to nothing." I really enjoyed that line and the imagery that it brought forth. Overall the message of the poem is even when it seems like your life is falling apart, it is on you to get moving and change it.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
